    Alumni Friends Employers Breadcrumb Navigation Home School of Law News 2015 SIU law students and professor serving on It s On Us task force Share this page SIU law students and professor serving on It s On Us task force April 21 2015 Professor Jennifer Brobst participated as a panelist for the It s On Us A Community United in Change forum held last night at Morris Library on the SIU Carbondale campus Professor Brobst and SIU law students Candice Stearns Jordan Homer and Andriana Bicanin are serving on SIU s It s On Us task force The student led task force was formed last fall after the White House launched the public awareness and education campaign It s On Us The campaign and the SIU task force seek to engage college students and all members of campus communities in preventing sexual assault Speaking to The Southern Illinoisan after last night s forum Professor Brobst who is also the director of SIU Law s Center for Health Law and Policy said that she was impressed by the diversity of discussion topics and participants I was concerned that it might be a forum that was all talk but both the panelists

    page Lecture will explore Lincoln s law practice April 16 2015 Pete Rosenbery A lecture next week at Southern Illinois University Carbondale will provide perspective on how Abraham Lincoln s experiences as an attorney in Illinois helped propel him to become president of the United States Guy C Fraker a Bloomington attorney will present Lincoln s Ladder to the Presidency The Eighth Judicial Circuit as part of the Dean s Colloquium at the SIU School of Law The lecture is at 5 p m Monday April 20 in the Hiram H Lesar Building Auditorium The event is free and open to the public Fraker who has written extensively and lectures frequently on the Eighth Judicial Circuit will discuss Lincoln s experiences as an attorney riding to as many as 14 county seats within the circuit over 10 to 12 week periods Fraker is the author of a 2012 Southern Illinois University Press book Lincoln s Ladder to the Presidency The Eighth Judicial Circuit and he also served as a consultant on the award winning PBS documentary Lincoln Prelude to the Presidency Although most people know about Lincoln as president many don t realize that before leading the country he practiced

    police use of force Share this page Lecture will focus on police use of force March 31 2015 Pete Rosenbery Alicia Hilton a law professor actress and former FBI special agent will discuss police use of force later this week at Southern Illinois University Carbondale Hilton will present Preventing Police Misconduct The Dirty Harry Syndrome at 2 p m Thursday April 2 in the SIU School of Law Hiram H Lesar Building courtroom The event is free and is open to the public Lucian Dervan associate professor of law will provide follow up commentary There will also be a Q and A session after the presentation The law school s Federalist Society a registered student organization is sponsoring the event John R Christeson a third year law school student and organization president anticipates Hilton will several address issues during her discussion including different types of police misconduct and the motivations behind those actions how one incident can involve multiple types of misconduct and case law relating to use of force Hilton earned her law and master s degree with a focus on creative writing and art history from the University of Chicago and bachelor s degree in sociology from the

    the U S House of Representatives His lecture is set for 7 p m in the Student Center Auditorium Admission is free and the public is encouraged to attend The Paul Simon Public Policy Institute and the SIU Black Law Student Association BLSA are sponsoring the event Clyburn is the leadership liaison to the House Appropriations Committee and one of the Democratic Caucus primary liaisons to the White House President Obama has said Clyburn who came to Congress in 1993 is one of a handful of people who when they speak the entire Congress listens The congressman is one of the most respected leaders in the U S House David Yepsen institute director said We are grateful to the Black Law Students for helping to arrange his visit His discussion on voting rights issues on the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act couldn t come at a better time Willie Lyles III a first year student at the SIU School of Law worked as a staff and then legislative assistant for Clyburn for four and one half years from 2008 to 2013 He also interned in Clyburn s office in 2005 through the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Summer Internship Program As a former staffer I am excited to have Congressman Clyburn share his experiences and thoughts here at SIU Carbondale Lyles said As we reflect on the past and look to the future of voting rights in our country there is no better vessel to talk about the progress we have made and the work still left to do Katie Whitworth a second year law student and SIU BLSA president said the registered student organization is thrilled to co sponsor Clyburn s appearance Currently voting is more important than ever and directly relates to the BlackLivesMatter movement she said

  • April G. Troemper, SIU Law '98, appointed at-large Circuit Judge in the Seventh Judicial Circuit
    is effective April 2 2015 and will continue until the position is filled by the November 2016 General Election Chief Justice Rita B Garman recommended the appointment of Judge Troemper after a review pro cess by a special citizen screening committee which found Judge Troemper very well qualified for the position Every day that I ve taken the bench for the past five years I ve reminded myself that each case is unique each case deserves its own attention and each case will result in an outcome that may forev er change someone s life My heart has been and always will be dedicated to public service and I will forever be grateful to Chief Justice Garman the entire Illinois Supreme Court and the screening committee for having confidence in me to take my experience to the next level said Judge Troemper I also want to thank my colleagues for giving me the foundation and proper training to do the work of a circuit judge I am looking forward to this transition and I pledge to continue to work hard and will do all I can to promote public trust in our judicial system Judge Troemper graduated from Eastern Illinois University where she earned a B A in political science in 1994 and an M A degree in political science in 1995 She received her J D degree from Southern Illinois University School of Law in 1998 Since December 1 2009 she has served as Associate Circuit Court Judge of the Seventh Judicial Circuit Prior to taking the bench she worked at the law firms of Graham Graham Ltd from 1998 2003 Heyl Royster from 2003 2007 and Sorling Northrup from 2007 2009 She is currently the president of the Sangamon County Bar Association and the Profession of Lead ership
