  • Jeffery Farris, Class of '89, appointed Circuit Judge
    year terms Prior to his election as state s attorney Mr Farris served as Pulaski County Public Defender from 1991 1992 and was in solo practice from 1989 1992 Over the course of his career Mr Farris has practiced in nearly every area of civil and criminal law I am grateful for the appointment and to the Supreme Court and Justice Karmeier for placing their confidence in me Mr Farris said I am proud to have served the citizens of Alexander County for the past twenty two years as state s attorney I am looking forward to continuing to serve the citizens of Alexander County as a circuit judge A 1986 graduate of the University of Illinois Mr Farris received his juris doctor degree from Southern Illinois University School of Law He was admitted to practice law in Illinois in l989 Active in various legal civic and charitable organizations Mr Farris has served as lifetime member director and chairman of the board of trustees for the Olive Branch United Methodist Church and as former director president and benefactor of the Southern Foundation Inc He has also served as former president and director of the Cairo Chamber of Commerce Mr Farris is a member of the Illinois State Bar Association the Illinois States Attorney s Association and the Alexander Pulaski Counties Bar Association A lifelong resident of Olive Branch Mr Farris has been married to wife Terri for 33 years They have two children Mr Farris was chosen in an application process that included review by a six member screening committee appointed by Supreme Court Justice Lloyd A Karmeier who recommended Mr Farris to the Supreme Court Each applicant was interviewed and their credentials reviewed by members of the screening committee and by Justice Karmeier The screening committee members were retired

    engaged with legal education academy at AALS Annual Meeting January 07 2015 Several SIU Law faculty members were activley involved as presenters and organizers during the 2015 Annual Meeting of the American Association of Law Schools AALS The theme of this year s meeing which took place in Washington D C January 2 5 was Legal Education at the Crossroads Assistant Professor Twinette Johnson was selected to present from a call for papers during the Education Law Section s session entitled The Higher Education Act at 50 Professor Cindy Buys who is the chair of the International Law Section presented in two of its sessions Adding Foreign and Comparative Law to Your Course Guidelines Materials and Practical Advice for New Law Professors and The Influence of International Law on Government Decisionmaking Assistant Professor Jennifer Brobst presented in two sessions and was elected to the board of the Balance in Legal Education Section For the Section on Balance in Legal Education she presented in the session Pedagogy Promoting Practice Ready Law Students Lessons Learned from Recent Practice For the Section on Part Time Divison Programs co sponsored by the Section of Student Services she presented in the session Blowing Up Part

    Employers Current Students Information for Alumni Our People Deans Faculty Administrative Professional Staff Civil Service Staff Alumni Law Library Give to the School Info for Future Students Current Students Alumni Friends Employers JD Program Breadcrumb Navigation Home Academics Degree Programs JD Program Two Year Honors JD Share this page Two Year Honors JD Program The School of Law offers a program that allows eligible students to complete the JD degree in two years Interested students must indicate their interest in this program at the time of their application to law school Only students with outstanding academic credentials will be eligible for this program Students who are admitted into the program must maintain a GPA that is at or above the median for their class to continue with the accelerated schedule Students in SIU s Two Year Honors Program will begin in the fall semester and follow the traditional first year curriculum thereby allowing them to build camaraderie with the rest of the first year class a hallmark of the first year experience At the conclusion of the first year students in the program will continue on the accelerated scheduling during the summer and finish at the conclusion of the following

    s degree from an accredited four year institution have at least a 2 7 grade point average in the last two years of their bachelor s degree and complete the necessary application requirements Applications will be reviewed upon receipt of all required documents Candidates interested in the MLS degree apply first to the Graduate School and then to the School of Law Information on the process for applying to the Graduate School can be found at here The School of Law application can be found here The School of Law reviews applications on a rolling basis beginning in November We conduct a holistic review of every application received While LSAT GRE or GMAT are important factors in the admissions process the admissions committee also considers non numeric factors such as the personal statement letters of recommendation work experience community service and honors or awards Individuals who have completed a bachelor s degree or equivalent from an accredited institution in the United States or abroad by the first day of fall semester class are eligible for admission to the MLS program There are no prerequisite courses or specific majors required for entry Students from all disciplines and areas of study are admitted Applications for Fall entry are available in September Since we offer a rolling admissions process there is no absolute deadline However we strongly suggest applicants complete their application before April 1 Below is a checklist for MLS applicants For international applicants please visit the School of Law website for a specific list of requirements An application will not be reviewed until all application materials have been received Once a file is complete please allow 1 2 weeks for a committee decision to be reached Application and 50 Application Fee Personal Statement Current Resume Character and Fitness supplemental documents and

    LLM in Health Law and Policy from the Southern Illinois University School of Law while working with Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation as a SIH SIU Medical Legal Partnership LLM Fellow The Southern Illinois Medical Legal Partnership founded in 2002 as one of the first in the nation is a nationally award winning rural collaboration working with over 18 medical partners in 10 counties The SIH SIU MLP LLM Fellow will gain an in depth understanding of the policies and regulations that affect the health care industry while receiving practical experience eliminating barriers to health care by integrating legal assistance into the medical setting Fellowship Application Information 2015 2016 SIH SIU Medical Legal Partnership LLM Fellow Juliann Morland DaVee By combining resources and expertise through medical legal partnerships we can enhance our ability to improve the lives and health of those in need I saw the SIH SIU MLP LLM Fellowship as an amazing opportunity to continue my work with these partnerships while building a strong foundation in health law from one of the most longstanding health law programs in the nation Because the fellow works with Land of Lincoln I knew this would be a chance to learn from a nationally recognized award winning medical legal partnership I ultimately pursued this fellowship because in combination it offered the education and practical experience needed to be on the forefront of the growing crucial field of MLPs 2014 2015 SIH SIU Medical Legal Partnership LLM Fellow Keegan Warren Clem What drew me to the SIU SIU MLP LLM Fellowship was two fold MLPSI has a national reputation as an evidence based practice that leads the field in data collection and analysis In addition SIU s Center for Health Law and Policy is one of the oldest and most progressive health

    a Juris Doctore JD degree from an American Bar Association ABA accredited law school or an equivalent degree from a law school located in an English speaking country that follows the common law system Applicants who hold an equivalent degree from a law school located in a non English speaking non common law country may be admitted only upon a showing of proficiency in English Students show this proficiency in English either by achieving a certain score on the TOEFL or IELTS or by enrolling in the Conditional Admit or CESL Program Students applying as a conditional admit must complete an LLM application have taken the Test of English as a Foreign Language TOEFL have paid a 50 00 School of Law application fee and have submitted all foreign transcripts to the Law School Admissions Council www lsac org to be processed through the LLM Credential Assembly Service Applying to CESL www cesl siu edu admission applyonline php Students must complete all of the following before being considered a CESL application a copy of passport a financial statement form proof of funding payment of a 50 00 non refundable CESL application fee and proof of graduation if the applicant is under 18 years of age The financial statement form is included in the downloadable PDF on the CESL website If a student does not apply online the student will be instructed on how to provide financial information to complete the application process In addition a 1000 initial non refundable tuition deposit may be required in order to complete the admission process This one time fee indicates the student s commitment to attend CESL and secures course enrollment If the student registers at the beginning of the term in which they have been admitted and subsequently attends one term at CESL the 1000 deposit will be credited towards his her tuition Conditionally admitted international students who need an I 20 form to enter the U S should contact Michelle Neill at the Center for International Students and Scholars Michelle can be reached at mneill siu edu or 618 453 5774 All of the above documents must be received three months prior to the start of CESL classes in order to provide a complete international application CESL has four different start times August October January and June Consequently students who wish to start in the Fall 2015 term must have their application complete by June 22 2015 Cost All international applicants are generally ineligible for educational expense loans available to United States citizens Therefore they must be prepared to provide the financial resources for all educational personal and living expenses for the entire duration of The Program The cost of the Program will vary depending upon in which Plan see above the student is placed The estimated cost for Plan B is as follows Plans A and C would cost more or less respectively Plan B Tuition and Fees estimate based on tuition for 2015 CESL Curriculum tuition and fees for 5
