    provision of legal services for over 7 500 legal defense plan participants As the organizations primary legislative advocate Mr Smoot writes legislation testifies before legislative bodies and speaks often regarding police related topics such as Public Employment Labor Law Pension Benefits Law Section 1983 Civil Rights Litigation and Police Use of Force Mr Smoot has also written several articles for The Policemen s Magazine as well as numerous police labor publications and newsletters He co authored Police Leadership Challenges in a Changing World published in July 2012 and authored a contribution to the Special Report titled Mending Justice Sentinal Event Reviews published in September 2014 both by the US Department of Justice National Institute of Justice Mr Smoot also serves as the elected Treasurer of the National Association of Police Organizations NAPO a national law enforcement advocacy group representing over 250 000 police officers He has served on the Advisory Committee for the National Law Enforcement Officers Rights Center in Washington D C since 1996 He is a member of the Advisory Committee and a speaker at the Chicago Kent College of Law s Annual Illinois Public Sector Labor Relations Law Program He also serves on the Use of Force Advisory Committee the Police Pursuit Advisory Committee the Racial Profiling Advisory Committee and the Task Force on Police Integrity for the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board Smoot speaks regularly at state national and international forums regarding community policing public safety and public employee labor issues A proud veteran himself Smoot has also been a featured speaker at the National Academy of Arbitrators and several CLE programs regarding the Rights of Military Employees Mr Smoot was selected for inclusion in Super Lawyers Rising Stars 2008 2009 and has been recognized as one of the Top Employment Labor Attorneys in

    this page Vikas S Dhar Class of 2003 Dhar Law LLP in Boston In 2010 I founded Dhar Law LLP in Boston where our primary focus was to further our profession and the cause of justice My brother Vilas and I formed our firm in with a specific vision to merge the litigation practice that I developed from several years as a partner with a boutique Boston firm with his expertise in technology and transactional work as a corporate attorney By pooling our collective talents and resources we expected to contribute a substantial portion of our practices to community lawyering working directly with local national and international groups to provide expert legal assistance to various non profit initiatives and in performing varied pro bono work This concept was fueled by my time at SIU and the law school s tradition of being established in the public interest serving the public good We have found that our vision has been extremely attractive to both established and new attorneys In the process of growing our firm we have reinforced in our attorneys a commitment to engage with our communities on a daily basis whether through providing pro bono legal services by supporting local neighborhood and town organizations by providing assistance to new arts programs or by helping entrepreneurs build community businesses Our pro bono clients include organizations focusing on urban redevelopment global health NGO s indigent clients without access to counsel and asylum applicants and non commercial organizations pushing the frontiers of technology research We were recently requested to advise School of Leadership Afghanistan SOLA an organization whose goal is to prepare Afghan students for study in the U S placing special emphasis on creating necessary conditions for ambitious young women to pursue their studies We also represent the Milana Foundation a

    page Della Nelson Class of 1984 Civil personal injury litigation concentrating on traumatic brain injury cases My son had a traumatic brain injury a while ago which changed my work and life focus My work now gives me the flexibility to enjoy an active lifestyle here in Colorado I am able to train for and participate in triathlons marathons and trail races It also makes my day to be able to work with my daughter every day Educational Background J D SIU School of Law B A Southern Illinois University Psychology Cum Laude A A Springfield College Magna Cum Laude Current Role Civil personal injury litigation concentrating on traumatic brain injury cases What do you like most about your work The best part of my job is finally being able to work for myself I ve worked as both an associate and law partner in large to mid size firms in the past The freedom to work for myself allows me to concentrate my work on what I am passionate about Can you work 40 hrs week and be successful If you want to raise a family you simply have to realize that your work goals will be interrupted by family life There will be constant bumps in the road that will affect your work life balance kids with fevers learning disabilities ball games homework etc Most firms especially larger firms expect you to work 70 80 hours a week That s almost an unspoken minimum for them In order to become really successful as an attorney your main focus in life needs to be your work Having said all that everyone has to determine what their definition of success is I believe that my years of putting my family first was the right choice for me I wouldn t
