    Students Current Students Alumni Friends Employers Degree Programs Breadcrumb Navigation Home Academics Degree Programs JD Program Share this page JD Program The Juris Doctor J D degree is a post baccalaureate program designed for those who wish to practice law Traditionally the 90 credit hour program takes three years to complete Students who enroll in two continuous summer sessions may be eligible to graduate in two and one half years This program is a full time day time program with fall admission only This program is fully accredited by the American Bar Association and is a member of the Association of American Law Schools Our JD program selectively admits a small class of students each year so you each get the personal attention you deserve SIU Law focuses on taking the theoretical and turning it into what works You ll master theory But you ll also learn to understand that theory will only take you so far To go the distance you ll develop a skill set that you ll never stop adapting skills that are in short supply yet great demand Our curriculum equips you for a career in any environment from a legal aid office to a large urban law firm from a corporate boardroom to a government agency Requirements for the J D Degree 11 First Year Required Courses 32 Credit Hours 4 Upper Level Required Courses 14 Credit Hours Academic Advising Menu Substance must take 4 from list of 14 courses 10 to 12 Credit Hours Academic Advising Menu Experiential Education must take 6 credits from list of approved Experiential Education Menu courses 1 Course to Fulfill Senior Writing Requirement 3 to 5 Credit Hours Passing Grade of 1 3 in all required courses Overall cumulative GPA of 2 300 or above AND cumulative GPA of

  • Joint Degree Programs | School of Law | SIU
    Admission to a joint degree program is subject to the approval of the Associate Dean of the School of Law and the program representative in the non law department Students must gain admission to both programs See Graduate Catalog for details Students interested in participating in a joint degree program should apply to both programs and begin making plans for participation during the Spring semester of their first year of law study after their fall grades have been received How to Apply Planning for participation in a joint degree program includes meeting with the Associate Dean of the School of Law currently Chris Behan and meeting with a representative of the desired non law degree program These meetings should take place after receipt of the Fall semester law grades Once students have met with the Associate Dean and the non law program representative they should complete the Joint Degree Program Application Form and turn it in to the School of Law Registrar s Office Students will be notified of their acceptance or rejection for participation in the concurrent degree program prior to the end of the Spring semester of their first year of law school Guidelines Participation in a joint degree program is contingent upon compliance with applicable rules in the law school and the non law degree department This includes maintaining a 2 600 cumulative gpa in law school work while participating in the joint dgree program Failure to comply with applicable rules and policies may result in the student being withdrawn from the non law program Registration Registration for a non law course procedure Student must bring a Course Request Form from the Graduate School completed and signed by the program representative in the non law department and the Associate Director of the Graduate School currently Dr Ratna

    Moot Court Program Share this page Moot Court Program SIU School of Law is highly regarded for our excellent moot court program All first year students participate in an oral advocacy intra school competition as part of their Lawyering Skills class Second and third year students can compete nationally in either the Appellate Advocacy division or Trial Advocacy division First Year Lawyering Skills Appellate Advocacy During the first year of law school as part of the Lawyering Skills course all students write an appellate brief and make an oral argument before a panel of judges that includes trial judges and attorneys Students who perform well are selected to participate in an Honors round and are recognized at the annual Awards Ceremony Appellate Advocacy After the first year students may compete for selection to the Appellate Advocacy Division of the Moot Court Board Students interested in appellate advocacy participate in an multi round Intramural Moot Court Competition during the fall of their second year From these students several are selected to represent the school in national moot court competitions beginning in the spring of their second year and continuing into their third year Southern Illinois success in national competitions is notable
