    hosts Black Lives Matter Day of Action Vigil October 22 2014 The SIU Law Chapter of the Black Law Student Association BLSA held a vigil today at the SIU School of Law to join in solidarity with other groups across the nation in a Black Lives Matter day of action Watch local news coverage KFVS12 and WPSDLocal6 Students faculty and staff attended the event which began with statements from several members of BLSA Some may ask the question why are we here and why is this cause so important and urgent said first year law student Willie Lyles III A friend of mine Dr Katrina Gamble summed it up this way We are fighting for our humanity When I think one day my young nephew s life might be in danger for simply existing in his black skin the urgency of this fight is undeniable What is at stake can t be captured with words It can only be felt and seen in the eyes of those weary from the heartache and rage that comes with seeing so many black lives taken To commemorate the event and to identify with others involved in the movement the students then unrolled a

  • Orientation Service Project - Class of 2017
    2017 August 28 2014 The members of the Class of 2017 bring an impressive range of experiences to the SIU Law community They represent 65 undergraduate institutions and 28 different undergraduate majors Twelve have masters degrees Some of have served our country through the military reserves or active duty Several have studied or traveled abroad to Asia Europe and the Middle East Some have written scholarly publications in the fields of intellectual property and healthcare Their resumes include work experience as human resources manager registered medical technologist deputy chief of staff social worker AmeriCorps VISTA member professor high school teacher certified Professional Air Traffic Controller registered U S patent agent and major league baseball player Their varied backgrounds experiences and passions will enhance SIU Law s learning environment for the next three years But during the annual Orientation Service Project this year at Giant City Stables the first call for volunteers included a request for anyone with carpentry experience That was not a problem at all More than a half dozen students stepped forward for that group The rest readily accepted assignments painting cleaning and working on trails These students like so many before them arrived at SIU ready to roll up their sleeves and get to work on the challenge ahead of them See photos Their efforts were greatly appreciated Thank you for once again choosing Giant City State Park to be the beneficiary of your Pro Bono Volunteers They got a lot done in a relatively short period of time and we are very pleased Please be sure to extend to the students our sincere appreciation We wish them the best Carolyn Ferdinand Friends of Giant City I just wanted to say thank you to everyone for all you did for me here at the stables You have
