  • SIU Law Welcomes Three New Faculty Members
    Carolina Chapel Hill and North Carolina Central University NCCU School of Law As a member of the faculty at NCCU for ten years Brobst taught Evidence and Professional Responsibility and developed the law school s first Domestic Violence clinic and Scientific Evidence courses In 2011 she received the Cheryl Amana Burris Faculty Award for Distinguished Service for her contributions to women s leadership and service Prior to entering academia Brobst was a child forensic interviewer and an assistant prosecuting attorney in South Bend Indiana Brobst currently serves in the Balance in Legal Education Section of the Association of American Law Schools Her publications and presentations have spanned the academic professional and public service arenas with a devotion to interdisciplinary dialogue and collaboration Brobst will teach Public Health Law and Legal Profession this year and will direct the activities of the Center for Health Law and Policy Edward C Dawson Assistant Professor of Law Ed Dawson received his J D with high honors from the University of Texas School of Law and his B A summa cum laude from the University of Notre Dame Dawson served as a judicial law clerk to the Honorable Ed Carnes United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit and Honorable Anthony Kennedy United States Supreme Court Between his clerkships and academia he practiced appellate law in Austin Texas for eight years most recently as a partner at Yetter Coleman LLP While in practice he represented clients in Texas state trial and appellate courts and federal trial and appellate courts and the United States Supreme Court in a wide variety of cases including public law cases and commercial disputes Prior to joining the faculty of SIU he was a teaching fellow and assistant professor of professional practice at Louisiana State University s Paul M Hebert Law Center where he taught legal research and writing civil rights litigation and constitutional law His scholarship focuses on constitutional law civil rights law and federal courts Dawson is a regularly invited presenter at programs of the National Association of Attorneys General Training and Research Institute in Washington D C and throughout the U S He is scheduled to teach Federal Courts Civil Rights Advanced Torts and Legislative and Administrative Process Angela Upchurch Associate Professor of Law Angela Upchurch received her J D from Loyola University Chicago School of Law where she graduated first in her class and served as the editor in chief for the Loyola University Chicago Law Journal and as a Loyola Child Law Fellow After graduation from law school Upchurch was a law clerk to the Honorable Michael M Murphy of the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit and to the Honorable Avern Cohn of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan Prior to joining the law faculty at Southern Illinois University School of Law Upchurch was a Professor of Law and the Associate Dean for Pedagogical Development at Capital University Law School She also served as the Academic
