  • Pro Bono Requirement | School of Law | SIU
    required to complete 35 hours of pro bono work prior to graduation While many schools encourage support or recognize pro bono work this requirement is the first of its kind for a law school in Illinois Although the requirement of pro bono service is new to the law students of SIU pro bono work is not SIU Law students have a history of public and community service including pro bono work In 2014 15 students completed more than 5 000 hours of pro bono work Students have until graduation to complete their pro bono requirement by submitting their hours through Symplicity CSM Under the rules passed by the faculty the work must be law related uncompensated supervised by an attorney and not for academic credit This means that work in a legal clinic or externship setting will only apply if it exceeds the amount needed for academic credit Also not all public volunteer or community service work will necessarily meet the pro bono requirement The work must be law related to qualify Students learn more about the pro bono requirement and pro bono opportunities during Pro Bono Week Timed to coincide with the annual celebration of pro bono by the American Bar Association in October of each year Pro Bono Week exposes students to the steps needed to meet the pro bono requirement the opportunities for pro bono work both inside and outside the School of Law and the benefits of doing pro bono work to their career and the profession Pro bono work has long been thought to improve the law student experience According to Illinoisprobono org the state wide pro bono website for Illinois in addition to providing services to people of limited means law students benefit from performing pro bono work through exposure to many personal and

    an attorney at Sandberg Phoenix von Gontard since 1984 and a shareholder since 1989 She has almost thirty years of experience representing hospitals and physicians in medical m alpractice cases in Illinois and Missouri In 2003 Kathy opened Sandberg Phoenix s first branch office in Carbondale Illinois The Sandberg Phoenix Southern Illinois office serves central and southern Illinois law by offering Legal Advice and defense to businesses hospitals and physicians Kathy is the Managing Partner of Sandberg Phoenix s Southern Illinois office in Carbondale and is licensed to practice in Illinois and Missouri She is a member of the Illinois State Bar Association the Missouri Bar Association and the Jackson County Bar Association She is also an active member and past President of the Southern Illinois Inn of Court The Inn of Court is dedicated to the promotion of professionalism amongst judges and lawyers and the mentoring of new attorneys and law students Kathy is also a member of her firm s Diversity Committee where she enjoys assisting with the ISBA Law and Leadership program for young people at SIU School of Law In two recent articles Kathy was asked to reflect on the legal profession She spoke to the

  • Chris Behan starts work as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs
    his exceptional interpersonal skills along with his military experience equip him well for the challenges of this position Fountaine said Behan joined the law faculty at SIU in 2006 He teaches and writes about criminal law evidence military law international criminal law and trial advocacy I am looking forward to serving our students helping my colleagues and working with the University administration as we continue to provide a rigorous high quality education at the School of Law he said Prior to joining the faculty at SIU School of Law Behan was a United States Army Judge Advocate General s Corp officer for more than 10 years During his military career he also served as a legal assistance attorney military prosecutor criminal defense attorney administrative law attorney international and operational law attorney and legal advisor to U S forces in the Sinai Desert as part of the Multinational Force and Observers Behan has served as the faculty advisor for the Mock Trial Board since 2009 Since that time he has coached or supervised the preparation of teams in 2 3 competitions per semester In 2011 he pioneered a new mock trial competition format the small scale mock jury trial competition In this format students try their cases to a panel of lay jurors Prior to trial students negotiate jury instructions and pretrial orders with their opponents from other schools The trials begin with voir dire of the jury and proceed to a jury verdict on the merits The small scale mock jury trial format closely replicates what happens at an actual trial and provides a superior advocacy and competition experience for students Behan plans to continue teaching and writing about trial advocacy during his service as Associate Dean He is currently involved in plans to host an international comparative common law

    develop your academic skills as a law student and your professional skills as a lawyer To assist you we offer programs that extend from orientation through bar preparation First Year Study Groups In the fall semester first year students participate in mandatory study groups that are guided by a curriculum designed to facilitate optimal skill development Most students find their study groups are so essential that they elect to continue meeting in the spring and make friends and colleagues they keep for life Second Year Resources Second year students are beginning to turn their attention to the bar exam which they will take after the third year The director of the Academic Success Program supports students with various issues including course selection and preparing for the Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam MPRE at the end of the second year The program director also maintains an extensive library of study aids and other resources for students to borrow Third Year Programs To help prepare students in their third year for the approaching bar exam the Academic Success center offers various workshops and information sessions Topics include strategies for the Character and Fitness part of the bar application taking the bar in other
