    Library Give to the School Info for Future Students Current Students Alumni Friends Employers Breadcrumb Navigation Home School of Law News 2008 News Welcome Central States Law Schools Association Share this page This news story October 24 2008 On Friday Oct 24 and Saturday Oct 25 the SIU School of Law will host the annual meeting and conference of the Central States Law Schools Association CSLSA Judge Michael S Kanne of the U S Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit will be the guest speaker on Friday evening to open the conference On Saturday thirty two scholars representing more than twenty different law schools will present their research on a wide range of legal topics including intellectual property international law corporate law and employment law Faculty and students are invited to attend any of the presentations during the day on Saturday Presentation Schedule Saturday October 25 8 30 9 35 am Panel A Professional Standards Panel B Intellectual Property 9 45 11 45 am Panel C International Law Panel D Constitutional Law 11 45 12 45 pm Panel E Commercial Law Panel F Tax Law 1 30 3 00 pm Panel G Criminal Law Panel H Procedural Law 3

    Law Student Experience Student Organizations IP Bands Battle for the Bar Share this page IP Bands Battle for the Bar Event organizers pictured above left to right Peter Su Emcee Jacy Carpenter President Julie Wolf VP Kiersten Von Klekner Alt Daniel Fanning 1L Reps not pictured Kathleen Smith Secretary Thomas Sanner Executive Board Event Summary by Jacy Carpetner IP Soc y President 2015 16 As part of our commitment to copyright law and the performing arts the SIU Intellectual Property Society hosted its first annual Bands Battle for the Bar fundraising event at Tres Hombres on November 5th 2015 The event showcased five bands featuring talented law students Taylor Sprehe Chris Konya Alan Mabee Bill Albee Aaron O Brien Dakota Cummins Gil Richardson and John Skrabacz The genres of music ranged from acoustic and rock to alternative and folk music The event was emceed by the hilarious 1L Peter Su who entertained the crowd between sets Professors Tom Britton and Jennifer Camero served as judges for the event The winners Chris Konya and his father Paul Konya otherwise known as The Konyas took home a 250 cash prize The event raised over 800 including the cash prize and was well attended and well received by law students and the community IP Society President Jacy Carpenter and Vice President Julie Wolf coordinated the event along with the help of officers Kathleen Smith Kiersten Von Klekner Alt Thomas Sanner and Daniel Fanning Special thanks to the sound guy Peter Julian AKA Bongo Pablo Peter Su Carlton Fay and our incredible judges Huge thanks to Tres Hombres for allowing us to rock out at their venue The turn out absolutely exceeded my expectations The bar was completely packed from wall to wall It was great to see the Carbondale community and SIU Law

  • IP Society Trip to Nashville | School of Law | SIU
    a graduate of SIUC and native of southern Illinois Mr Jones regaled us with the story of how he came to invent the favorite ice cream treat of the entire group Furthermore Mr Jones spoke about his run ins with the patent system and his fight to fend off would be infringers of his invention Although not a lawyer Mr Jones provided valuable insight into his experiences with the judicial system as well as his experiences with a variety of intellectual property attorneys Our next speaker was Brad Smith co founder and Chief Executive Officer of Aspire Health Altough not a lawyer Mr Smith but provided wonderful insight on his work with various patent and other intellectual property attorneys while building Aspire Health from the ground up into a multi state corporation He suggested that future attorneys be as well rounded as possible i e although IP attorneys that we have a focus in healthcare etc These are the types of attorneys Mr Smith has found to be most invaluable to Aspire s growth Next the group listened to our host Mr Nate Bailey another SIU School of Law Alum In addition to hosting this event Mr Bailey gave us a wonderful overview and summary of various subgenres of Intellectual Property work Mr Bailey designed the presentation with an emphasis on how to advise small businesses and start ups in the intellectual property realm A late addition to the speaking group Mr Reid Waltz was a welcome reprieve from the complicated subject matter of patent law Mr Waltz is currently in house counsel for SESAC Inc a k a the Society of European State Authors and Composers He spoke on a plethora of issues surrounding the realm of copyright law Although Mr Waltz could have spoken for the entire day
