  • Early Start Program | Office of Graduate and Undergraduate Programs | San Jose State University
    students with remedial needs in mathematics and English to participate in the Early Start Program Early Start allows students to begin working towards college readiness in the summer prior to their freshman year and is intended to help them complete their remedial class requirements within the one year limit The Early Start program is required of all remedial freshmen with an Entry Level Mathematics ELM score below 50 and an English Placement Test EPT score below 147 EXCEPT those who fall into one or more of the following exempt categories Residents of a state other than California International students F1 and J1 visas only Educational Opportunity Program EOP Summer Bridge students Athletics Summer Bridge students Students who successfully petition for an exception to the Early Start requirement see below Students admitted after August 1 Students can satisfy their Early Start requirement at any CSU campus except Cal Maritime Most campuses including SJSU offer online courses however local students are strongly encouraged to attend live Early Start classes at SJSU If you are required to participate in the Early Start Program you will begin to receive messages in your MySJSU message center in early April informing you of the requirement PETITION FOR AN EXCEPTION TO THE EARLY START REQUIREMENT Students with a serious and compelling reason for not participating in the Early Start Program may petition for an exception to the requirement using the link above Exceptions will be granted only in instances in which it can be demonstrated that program participation would cause extreme hardship or is simply not possible Documentation will be required Please note that summer vacation plans will not be considered adequate grounds for an exception All petitions for an exception to the Early Start Program requirement must be filed by Friday July 17 CONTACT US If

    apply to an alternative campus that offers your preferred major Impaction Criteria for Freshmen CSU eligible freshman applicants will be ranked in each major based on a combination of their self reported GPA at the time you apply and official SAT or ACT test scores called the Eligibility Index or EI Freshman impaction results for previous application terms are listed here Impaction Criteria for Transfers CSU eligible transfer applicants will be ranked in each major based on their self reported GPA at the time you apply New for Fall 2016 transfer applicants Fall 2016 transfer applicants will be required to complete a Supplemental Application including grades for work completed in Fall 2015 Information about completing the supplemental application will be posted to applicants MySJSU accounts in late December We plan to assign the supplemental application the week of January 4 Students will have about three weeks to submit the application Applicants who do not submit this form by the deadline posted to their MySJSU To Do List will not be considered for admission More information about supplemental criteria for transfer students for the Fall 2016 application term can be found here Beginning Fall 2016 some programs will give preference in the impaction process to transfer applicants who have completed program specific preparatory courses For these programs applicants will be ranked for admission to major based on a combination of self reported GPA and successful completion of approved program specific courses by the end of the Spring 2016 term Choose Your Major Carefully It is important to understand that though all majors are impacted the admission threshold for each major varies depending on the capacity of the major to take new students and the number of students applying for that major in that term We encourage you to a pply for

    priority filing deadline date March 2 is also the California Student Aid Commission s CSAC GPA verification deadline for Cal Grant consideration Create a FSA ID The FSA ID replaces the FAFSA PIN All students parents must create a FSA ID The FSA ID will be used to electronically sign the FAFSA and promissory notes and signal the completion of entrance and exit counseling Parents who do not have a social security number will not be able to create a FSA ID and will have to sign their student s FAFSA by completing a signature page and mailing the page to FAFSA The FSA ID will be used to log into federal student aid websites such as fafsa gov studentloans gov National Student Loan Data System My Federal Student Aid Spartan Scholarships Apply for Spartan Scholarships Continuing incoming and international students are eligible to apply View the Scholarship webpage for additional information What happens next after submitting a FAFSA or a CA Dream Act Application Students will receive a Student Aid Report SAR from FAFSA or from CSAC California Student Aid Commission and a Document Request Letter DRL from the Financial Aid and Scholarship Office The DRL is sent to student s MySJSU and provides instructions to submit items found on their To Do List Required documents for the fall 2016 spring 2017 Award Year will be assigned in MySJSU beginning in March 2016 The priority deadline to submit all requested documents is Friday May 27 2016 Only students who submit all required documents by July 8 2016 will have their registration fees deferred Students not meeting the deadline MUST pay their registration fees from their own resources by the payment deadline Students should contact the Financial Aid and Scholarship Office if To Do List item s do not appear
