    and Arts One Washington Square San Jose Ca 95192 0124 Main line 408 924 5800 Mai Phan sjsu edu site index The School offers the Bachelor s of Arts in Social Work and a Master s in Social Work Housed in the College of Applied Sciences and Arts the school is one of four schools and seven departments Many of these programs engage in interdisciplinary efforts together that benefit both students and faculty A unique feature of the School of Social Work at San José State University is its commitment to using and promoting a trans cultural perspective throughout its curriculum This perspective honors the strengths of diverse cultures enhances the well being of individuals families and advocates for social and economic justice Related to the school s commitment to the trans cultural perspective it is very committed to offering global experiences at the local and international levels Many different kinds of internships are located in a variety of communities throughout the Bay Area that serve diverse populations In addition the school offers educational experiences in various parts of the world The faculty is actively engaged in scholarship and research in an array of areas A special aspect of these research activities include a community based approach Faculty members associate with various agencies in the greater metropolitan area to engage in this form of research Students participate with faculty and organizations to identify research needs of these institutions collect and analyze data and disseminate findings and provide recommendations back to the agencies Students who engage in these experiences discover the importance of research in solving real problems facing individuals families and communities as well as the organizations that serve them Thank you for exploring the School of Social Work Please review the various programs and opportunities available at the school

    opportunities available at our Why Study Statistics page San José State University is located forty five miles south of San Francisco and is in the heart of Silicon Valley home to hundreds of firms in high tech including Google Intel Apple Hewlett Packard eBay Cisco NASA s Ames Research Center as well as many other industries including biotechnology and financial sector firms The mathematics department at SJSU offers degrees in statistics at both the bachelors and masters levels For more information about these programs please see our Degree Programs page See the Department of Mathematics web site for more general information about the department The department also hosts the Center for Applied Mathematics Computation and Statistics which gives teams of SJSU students the experience of working on a real world problem sponsored by local businesses and government agencies to investigate problems arising from their work The December 19 2007 issue of The Economist includes an article on how statistical charts are worth 1000 words The statistical graphic above was drawn in the 19th century by Charles Joseph Minard It depicts the advance into and retreat from Russia by Napoleon s Grande Armée which was decimated by a combination of the Russian winter and the Russian army As a statistical chart the map unites six different sets of data Geography rivers cities and battles are named and placed according to their occurrence on a regular map The army s course the path s flow follows the way in and out that Napoleon followed The army s direction indicated by the color of the path brown leading into Russia black leading out of it The number of soldiers remaining the path gets successively narrower a plain reminder of the campaigns human toll as each millimeter represents 10 000 men Temperature the freezing
