    Canvas Athletics Give to SJSU Facebook Twitter RSS Navigate BACK to Colleges and Divisions Spartan Voices I am proud to be a Spartan because of the reputation it gives me SJSU has opened so many doors for me to network with companies in the Bay Area The hands on experience in laboratory classes has given me a practical application of my degree Chelsea Jackson 11 Biology Our college transforms science majors into professionals fully qualified for a global and regional work force We provide core science education for engineers health care professionals K 12 teachers and other technical fields as well as critical mathematics and science skills to students in non science majors Our goal is to enable all students to achieve a well rounded education by attaining the quantitative critical thinking and scientific skills necessary for lifelong learning and informed decision making on scientific issues I am grateful to loyal supporters who have helped move us toward this goal with recent accomplishments such as Undergraduate astrophysics students Richard Vo and Michael Sandoval working with Assistant Professor Aaron Romanowsky made national news when they sequentially discovered the two densest galaxies yet found in the universe Biology Professor Scott Shaffer working with students Emma Kelsey and Corey Clatterbuck designed a revolutionary egg shaped logger device that permits the capture of real time data on nesting behavior of endangered bird and turtle species I invite you to invest in our college and its students so that we can achieve goals such as Enhancing the student experience by upgrading lab and classroom facilities with new tables seating and paint Undertaking college wide strategic planning that builds on the Academic Affairs plan and SJSU President Mohammad H Qayoumi s Vision 2017 Strategic Plan Please give to the College of Science today Thank you Dean

    2015 Dr Walter R Jacobs became dean of the College of Social Sciences Dr Jacobs comes to us from the University of Wisconsin Parkside where he served as founding dean of the College of Social Sciences Professional Studies He was also a professor of sociology Prior to joining UW Parkside Dr Jacobs was on the faculty of the University of Minnesota Twin Cities for 14 years including five years as chair of the department of African American African Studies He received his B S degree in electrical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology 1990 and his M A and Ph D degrees in sociology from Indiana University Bloomington 1995 1999 An open door storyteller who prefers to be addressed informally Walt has authored a book on undergraduate media literacy and co edited an anthology on educational environments Walt is passionate about student success and has received department college and university awards for undergraduate teaching His current research explores personal and social possibilities of undergraduate students generation of creative digital nonfiction see The Pedagogy of Digital Storytelling in the College Classroom as an example Walt documented his first year as a dean in a blog on The Society Pages Dispatches From a New Dean He plans to resume the blog when he arrives at SJSU but will shift the focus to increasing the visibility of the social sciences in an era that usually highlights the STEM disciplines science technology engineering and math In addition to joining SJSU Walt will also become the Co Director of the Council of Colleges of Arts and Sciences Seminar for Chairs and Directors in which department heads examine the art and science of departmental administration through close interaction with both experienced and new leaders Walt enjoys service as mentor and looks forward to collaborating with

    Find Us Dr Ronald F Rogers Dr Ronald F Rogers became Associate Dean of the College of Social Sciences in January 2016 Prior to this position Dr Rogers served as a Professor and Chair in the Department of Psychology and has been on the faculty at SJSU since 1999 His management style is characterized by trust effective communication inclusiveness and above all transparency in the decision making process and allocation of resources Dr Rogers emphasizes effective enrollment management which is to say balancing the educational needs of our students within the budgetary and enrollment constraints placed upon us by the system professional development for faculty and staff curricular innovation student support and alumni outreach Throughout his research career Dr Rogers has investigated learning and memory across multiple levels of analysis His early research investigated cellular mechanisms of neuroplasticity thought to contribute to learning and memory More recently his research has focused on the scholarship of teaching and learning including investigations of classroom level engagement and the efficacy of a Massively Open Online Course MOOC in elementary statistics education His basic and applied research interests are reflected in the wide range of courses he has taught including undergraduate and graduate courses
