    SJSU is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges WASC WASC accredits public and private colleges and universities in the western states and Hawaii Separate agencies accredit community colleges and high schools Only accredited institutions may administer federal financial aid to their students At SJSU a Steering Committee representative of the entire SJSU community oversees our accreditation It consists of faculty staff students administrators and community members who contribute to and review our WASC Institutional report Senate Resolution SS S12 1 describes the Committee and how it is formed The current roster of the Steering Committee is found at Steering Committee Members Like all WASC schools we also have an Accreditation Liaison Officer ALO who communicates with WASC This is currently Dr Dennis Jaehne the AVP of Undergraduate Studies and Interim Deputy Provost The Faculty Chair of the Steering Committee who helps assemble the Institutional report and coordinate the meetings and activities of the Steering Committee Dr Camille Johnson Associate Professor in the Silicon Valley School of Management in the College of Business The SJSU Director of Assessment Dr Jinny Rhee is also a key member of the accreditation team Members of the Steering Committee attend WASC trainings workshops WASC Academic Resource Conferences and webinars At these meetings they learn about the WASC accreditation process share the accomplishments of SJSU and learn about the best practices from other institutions Many of the materials from these workshops are available online The WASC accreditation process was recently revised and compressed It now takes place over 18 months and requires only one on site visit The process is outlined in the WASC Handbook of Accreditation which was finalized July 1 2013 In July 2015 the WASC Commision reaffirmed SJSU s accreditation for seven years as summarized in its findings in the

    first institution of public higher education in the state 1935 Renamed San José State College 1949 SJSU accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges WASC 1960 The individual California State Colleges were brought together as a system by the Donahoe Higher Education Act of 1960 1972 The system becomes California State University and Colleges 1982 The system becomes the California State University CSU Today the 23 campuses of the CSU system include comprehensive and polytechnic universities and since July 1995 the California Maritime Academy a specialized campus The SJSU campus alone is composed of 30 000 students and over 2 000 faculty and staff The information SJSU prepares for its reaccreditation review provides an excellent data view of SJSU To nurture the continued development of strong academic programs and services to support student development and success the campus is fully engaged in a strategic planning process intended to help San José State University prepare for the future It helps us serve our mission reach our vision and guide resource allocation The campus is located in downtown San José the site of the oldest civil settlement established in 1777 in California The city of San José is the 11th largest city in the United States and the third largest in California with a population of 926 200 Known as the Capital of Silicon Valley San José was called the epicenter of information technology by Fortune magazine The education level of the San José metropolitan area workforce is one of the highest in the country 67 percent of the workforce has some post secondary education and 48 percent have earned a college degree The city also has the lowest crime rate of any major city those with populations of 500 000 or more in the United States Core Principles and

    we are defining student learning how we are assessing student learning and how we are making policy resource and program decisions in which student learning and achievement are primary considerations For this reason much of the data that are included in the WASC report concern assessment We use data collected in the Program Assessment process to demonstrate our educational effectiveness at several different levels First we must demonstrate that our University has learning goals for our students and that we have come to a consensus regarding what it means to be a graduate of San Jose State University WASC outlines five core competencies written and oral communication quantitative reasoning information literacy and critical thinking that reflect the national consensus on fundamental knowledge skills and abilities of an educated person Therefore in concert with our University Learning Goals ULGs we must demonstrate that our graduates have developed these core competencies at a level of achievement appropriate to their degree Second we must demonstrate that our programs are effective at achieving these learning goals as well as meeting specific goals relevant to different disciplines This means that programs must be active in the program review and program planning processes and can demonstrate that they are on par with national comparison groups and that their students are gaining the necessary knowledge for success in that discipline We must also make this information available publicly and show how assessment results guide program planning Third we must demonstrate that our co curricular programs are contributing to the overall education of our students Finally we must demonstrate that our institutional process and structures are focused on and guided by student learning goals Below are some videos explaining the process as well as links to some of the resources available to us as we develop the Institutional
