  • Vince Demuzio Governmental Internship Program - General Info
    per week in one of several local state agency offices while attending classes full time and perform duties as regular staff members The most important criteria for the internship experience are good oral and written communication skills and a strong commitment to public service Interns may begin working any time openings are available Subject to evaluation interns may work upwards of eight semesters Concurrently they enroll for two or three hours of internship credit each semester Interns enrolled in a field practicum course required for their major may use that course to fulfill the academic requirements of the internship provided part of the course assignments relate to the Demuzio internship experience Enrollment in the internship course is waived for the first semester if the internship begins six weeks or later into the fall or spring semester Upon completion of the internship many students seek employment at other levels of government pursue further graduate or professional education or choose career opportunities in the private sector The program has several objectives Make Illinois state government an attractive career goal for college graduates Provide undergraduate college students with a unique opportunity to work in and observe close hand the benefits of careers in public service Partner with participating legislators and state agencies in their efforts to attract qualified candidates to careers in state government What are the requirements for eligibility Maintain full time student status through period of internship minimum of twelve credit hours per fall spring semester and six credit hours during summer sessions and make good academic progress toward degree completion as determined by the Vice President for Academic Affairs Minimum of junior status i e at least fifty six hours of baccalaureate level course work and be in good academic standing Minimum GPA of 2 75 overall and or 3

    selected for a Vince Demuzio Governmental Internship must have direct ongoing contact with a faculty member and be enrolled in an internship course each semester of the internship except summer This requirement is waived for the first semester if the internship begins six weeks or later into the semester Interns enrolled in a field practicum required for their major may use that course to fulfill the academic requirements of the internship provided part of the course assignments relate to the Demuzio internship experience Undergraduate students selected for a Vince Demuzio Governmental Internship are paid from state funds Funds will be transferred to the Office of the President the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute SIUC and the Career Development Center SIUE for approved internships Student Eligibility Students must have a minimum of junior status and be in good academic standing Students must maintain full time academic status through the period of the internship minimum of 12 credit hours during fall and spring semesters and 6 credit hours during summer session Students must have and maintain a minimum GPA of 2 75 overall and or 3 00 in the major on a 4 00 scale Students must maintain good academic progress as determined by the Vice President for Academic Affairs Students must be willing to commit for a one to two year period of time Concurrent enrollment in a two or three credit hour internship course is required for fall and spring semesters with the exception of the first semester if the internship begins six weeks or later into the fall or spring semester As noted above interns enrolled in a field practicum required for their major may use that course to fulfill the academic requirements of the internship provided part of the course assignments relate to the Demuzio internship experience Students selected for the internship experience may upon evaluation at the end of each semester hold the internship position for up to eight semesters or up to the date of commencement whichever comes first Upon graduation if a student elects to continue additional undergraduate studies provided that the student is full time enrolled and provided that an internship position is available the student may be allowed two additional semesters in the internship program to complete a second degree or additional coursework needed to gain entry into graduate school The student will be placed in a different office than the initial internship for example if the student worked for a legislator during the first appointment the student will need to seek a state agency position for the second placement As in the initial placement the student will be required to maintain eligibility requirements and follow program policies for the additional two semesters University policies regarding students holding multiple positions will apply for this internship program Security sensitive positions may require the state agency to conduct a pre employment background investigation which includes a criminal background check before any offer is made Governmental Internship Procedures The student community at both SIUC and SIUE

  • Biography of SIU President Glenn Poshard
    graduate of Southern Illinois University Carbondale the first such graduate to serve on its Board of Trustees Entering on the G I Bill he earned a bachelor s degree in secondary education in 1970 a master s degree in health education in 1974 and a Ph D in higher education administration in 1984 During this time he worked as both a student worker and a civil servant While working toward his master s degree Dr Poshard taught and coached at Galatia and Thompsonville high schools Over the next ten years he served as Assistant Director of the Southern Illinois Regional Education Service Center and Director of the Area Service Center for Educators of the Gifted In August 1984 Dr Poshard was appointed to the Illinois State Senate He was successfully elected later that year and was re elected in 1986 Based on his success in the State Senate the citizens of southern Illinois sent him to the United States Congress in 1989 to represent the 22nd Congressional District He set a limit of ten years on his service in Congress and in 1998 won the Democratic nomination for Governor of the State of Illinois but lost in the general election During his years in the Illinois Legislature and in the U S Congress he advocated for campaign finance reform clean coal research the Shawnee National Forest tourism economic development transportation and higher education Dr Poshard limited individual donations to his campaign and refused to accept donations from political action committees In 1999 Dr Poshard and his wife Jo founded the Poshard Foundation which raises money to fund care for abused neglected and abandoned children The Foundation has been a leader in efforts to prevent child abuse throughout southern Illinois including helping to build a new 600 000 women s shelter
