    Alfred Halstead suggested it be called volleyball Robert Roberts an employee of Springfield College in 1887 while it was still the School for Christian Workers was the individual who coined the phrase body building while authoring books on weight lifting exercise and body building Athletics The Springfield College men s volleyball team has earned three consecutive NCAA Division III Men s Volleyball Championships in 2012 2013 and 2014 The team represented the United States in the World University Games in Kazan Russia in July 2013 Springfield College graduate Erin Pac 03 received a bronze medal in bobsledding at the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver She joins many other Springfield College alumni who have participated in the Olympics as athletes coaches sports psychologists athletic trainers administrators judges officials and volunteers including Greco Roman gold medalist Jeff Blatnick 79 and swimming gold medalist William Yorzyck 54 Community Springfield College was named a finalist for the President s Award for Community Service by the Corporation for National and Community Service The College was one of four finalists in the education category and also was awarded Honor Roll with Distinction status in the category of general community service This nationwide designation is part of the 2014 President s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll and recognizes institutions and their students across the country for their commitment to volunteer service The College has been recognized by the Carnegie Foundation as one of a select group of colleges and universities throughout the U S that have earned the foundation s Community Engagement Classification This classification recognizes the College for its curriculum which involves students and faculty members addressing community needs as well as outreach and partnerships that benefit both the external community and the campus community Each year Springfield College students provide more than 120 000 hours of community service work in neighboring communities and organizations This dedication to the community has made it so that Springfield College is a frequent recipient of the Jostens NADIIIAA NCAA Community Service Award of Merit for student athlete participation in community projects a recipient of multiple Super 60 Awards from the Affiliated Chambers of Commerce of Greater Springfield Inc recognizing the College s significant contributions to the strength of the regional economy and has been presented with a proclamation from Springfield City Council for making the City of Springfield a better place to live and helping to improve the neighborhood to make it a better place to live work and learn Facilities The Paul E Tsongas Award from Preservation Massachusetts which recognizes Massachusetts colleges universities and preparatory schools that have utilized and embraced preservation in their educational identity for the benefit of future generations of students was awarded to Springfield College for renovations to Judd Gymnasia The landmark building also received a 2011 Preservation Award by the Springfield Preservation Trust The Springfield Preservation Trust is the only nonprofit non governmental organization dedicated to historic preservation in Springfield Campus In addition to classroom buildings and laboratories the 100 acre main

    Beynon BSS 300 polyurethane sandwich track system and long jump triple jump and pole vault runways The Appleton Tennis Courts include eight post tension concrete courts with US Open blue and green color scheme and Plexi pave coloring system to cushion courts Brennan Center Located at 45 Island Pond Road in Springfield the Brennan Center is the home of the School of Social Work Cheney Hall Cheney Hall is the main dining facility at Springfield College Cheney Hall has the ability to seat more than 600 people and has a sprawling view of Naismith Green Department of Public Safety The facility includes spaces for the officers and the various areas within the department such as the transportation office It also includes expanded space for vehicle storage Facilities and Campus Services The Facilities and Campus Services building houses service areas including electrical carpentry locksmith and maintenance Field House The 93 820 square foot Field House located adjacent to the Wellness and Recreation Complex incorporates a six lane running track with a Mondo FTX running surface four multipurpose courts each with the ability to be closed off by a netting system locker rooms a fully equipped 9 000 square foot strength and conditioning facility and more View photo gallery View time lapse photography of the construction Fuller Arts Center Performances lectures and more take place at the Fuller Arts Center Appleton Auditorium located within the center seats 300 individuals and includes a computerized stage lighting system sound system and acoustical wall panels View photo gallery Health Sciences Center The Health Sciences Center is home to the Department of Occupational Therapy and the Department of Physical Therapy The space includes classrooms labs and is the location for the College s stroke therapy group Herbert P Blake Hall Herbert P Blake Hall more commonly referred to as Blake Hall houses the School of Professional and Continuing Studies the departments of visual and performing arts emergency medical services management physician assistant and social sciences and the Alden Center for Interactive Learning Blake Hall also contains the College s medical simulation lab The hall is named after S Prestley Blake s father after he and his wife Helen Davis Blake made a gift to the College to support the Leadership for the 21 st Century The Campaign for Springfield College For several years Herbert P Blake was employed at the Standard Electric Time Company from which the College purchased Blake Hall from in 1990 Hickory Hall Hickory Hall houses classrooms and the Academic Success Center Irv Schmid Sports Complex The Irv Schmid Sports Complex includes two synthetic turf fields bleachers parking ticket booth and concessions The complex provides play and practice fields for the men s and women s soccer teams as well as for other team practices physical education classes and campus recreation The complex was named after Irv Schmid who was a men s soccer coach and teacher at Springfield College James Naismith Court The James Naismith Court located in Blake Arena was named
