    The mission of Babson Library is to provide the Springfield College community with access to instruction in and support of the use of information resources for the greater purpose of the College History The Springfield College library collection originated in the late 1800s when Jacob T Bowne donated his personal library of books related to YMCA history to the young College One of Bowne s students John W Cook began the campaign to create a true library for the College Edward Lippincott Tilton who designed the U S Immigrant Station on Ellis Island as well as the main branch of the Springfield City Library and Museums designed Marsh Memorial Library which currently houses the offices of the College President William Howard Taft dedicated Marsh Memorial Library on October 18 1913 The collection of materials housed in the library grew steadily for years until finally the pressing need for a larger space was acknowledged Babson Library opened in 1972 and was named for its benefactors Dr Paul T and Mrs Edith Babson of Boston Babson Library now houses both Library and Information Technology Services allowing students seamless use of a variety of information resources The top two floors of the building

  • Clinical Education Opportunities – School of Health Sciences and Rehabilitation Studies | Springfield College
    the out of hospital care field environment For student clinical field internships the EMSM program faculty works with four primary hospital sites and more than 20 fieldwork sites within a 50 mile radius of the campus all located in Massachusetts and Connecticut Occupational Therapy OT Practicum generally is a brief observational type encounter in a clinical setting that provides broad exposure to client populations service delivery settings and or types of OT practice Undergraduates in the pre professional program complete a minimum of two practica within their academic coursework Service learning combines classroom instruction with meaningful community service Embedded within several of the courses at both the pre professional and professional levels service learning experiences help students develop a stronger sense of civic engagement and responsibility while exposing them to societal needs that may be outside of their personal experience Level I fieldwork involves a more focused clinical experience that allows students to apply knowledge to practice and develop understanding of the needs of clients Before beginning their second semester students spend two weeks of full time days at a field site under the mentorship of an OT practitioner for the OCTH 584 course Many of the professional level courses also have assignments that require students to practice newly learned skills in a variety of level I field based settings Level II fieldwork occurs after students have completed all academic requirements It consists of two full time 12 week experiences supervised directly by a licensed occupational therapist Between the two these experiences must span the diagnostic categories the age range and the service delivery models Usually this takes the form of one fieldwork placement emphasizing the physical aspects of care for the adult client and one emphasizing the behavioral aspects of care These fieldwork experiences require that a duly licensed therapist who has passed the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy Examination and practiced for at least one year supervises the student Scheduling of practica service learning and course related level I fieldwork experiences is coordinated by classroom based faculty members with the assistance of staff members and the academic fieldwork coordinator The academic fieldwork coordinator works individually with students to identify and select appropriate sites for OCTH 584 and all level II fieldwork placements Some students choose to complete these assignments within a 60 75 minute drive from the campus while others prefer to complete one or more of these placements further away The Occupational Therapy Department maintains affiliation agreements with approximately 150 200 facilities most based in the Northeast with some in other areas of the country Physical Therapy PT The doctor of physical therapy DPT program incorporates two types of structured clinical experiences integrated clinical experiences and full time clinical experiences Integrated clinical experiences occur during the second third fourth and fifth semesters while students are simultaneously taking academic traditional classroom based courses Some integrated experiences take place on the campus while others occur within driving distance maximum one hour drive at clinics hospitals and sites
