    members will become happier and more productive Windhover embodies the message that in the 21st century the quality of intellectual endeavor is directly linked to the fulfillment of emotional and spiritual needs The hope is that the environment will be appreciated not just for what one sees but how one feels and how that experience contributes to overall well being The university envisions that community members will visit regularly to replenish their inner spirits the source of their creativity energy and endurance Windhover is not intended to replace a visit to Memorial Church the Center for Inter Religious Community Learning and Experiences a walk in the Rodin Sculpture Garden a hike up to the Dish a visit to the Cantor Center for Visual arts or a lunch under the eucalyptus trees For many community members however this will be their sanctuary a place to re establish balance and find tranquility For those who choose to visit Windhover is intended to offset the personal cost that can be entailed by students faculty and staff striving to reach pinnacle of their fields The Journey Nathan Oliveira s renowned Windhover series is named after The Windhover a poem written in 1877 by Gerard Manley Hopkins The five paintings were inspired by kestrels swooping above the Stanford foothills Oliveira felt the calming power of these works and believed they should hang together in a place set aside for contemplation In 1995 Suzanne Sumerlin Duca a former lecturer on art and art history and collector of Oliveira s work stepped forward to ensure his vision could be realized at Stanford For nearly two decades Duca the university and a devoted group of volunteers worked to build support for Windhover identify a suitable site and select an architectural design Unfortunately Oliveira did not live to see

    building reflects a keen understanding of the mission Its simple lines communicate a design for meditative thought The team at Aidlin Darling felt that even the approach to the building should contribute to the contemplative process Approaching the space one is guided alongside the building with only glimpses of the interior revealed As visitors move forward elements of nature surround them At the rear of the building a reflection pond offers light and expansive windows afford a range of views of the art Filtered light floods the site creating a beautifully balanced atmosphere Corten steel rammed earth walls stone glass and water are brought together to deepen the natural feeling immersing visitors in a calm state Outdoor Space A stone path A row of ginkgo trees A bamboo grove The approaches to Windhover are the work of landscape designer Andrea Cochran of Palo Alto Cochran s vision enhances the harmony of the site s interior She has retained existing elements from the campus s earliest days rooting the contemplative experience in history An old oak grove embraces the courtyard at the southern edge of the building Adjacent to the grove a series of ledges and slabs of granite as well

    also featured works by Francis Bacon Alberto Giacometti Richard Diebenkorn and Jackson Pollack In 1963 a survey of five years of his paintings and works on paper was shown at the Art Gallery of the University of California Los Angeles and a fifteen year survey of his paintings was organized by the Oakland Museum of California in 1973 He had a print retrospective in 1980 at California State University Long Beach and the California Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco organized a survey of his work in monotype in 1997 Oliveira was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1994 and received many other awards including a Guggenheim Fellowship two honorary doctorates and in 2000 membership in a distinguished order conferred by the government of Portugal His work is in the collections of many museums among them the Art Institute of Chicago the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Museum of Modern Art in New York Three of his paintings are featured in the Anderson Collection at Stanford University Video Nathan Oliveira on the Windhover project San Francisco Museum of Modern Art Watch Video The Art Oliveira loved the natural lands of the university For years he worked in an airy studio that boasted extraordinary vistas north to San Francisco and south to San Jose In the afternoons he would set out on long walks in the foothills where he would encounter magnificent birds of prey that make their home at the campus s edge hawks eagles owls and kestrels Oliveira began to include these birds in his canvases In 1972 a student s gift of a stuffed kestrel became a model for a series of drawings and paintings These works would come in and out

    Hours Windhover is open to current Stanford University students faculty and staff The center is open every day of the year from 11 00 am 11 00 pm Stanford ID cards are required to enter the building Food and drink are not allowed inside the building Stanford alumni may visit Windhover by obtaining a building access card from the Frances C Arrillaga Alumni Center 326 Galvez Street front desk during business hours Except during University holidays and University winter closure Upcoming closures include Thanksgiving November 27 and 28 2014 and winter closure December 20 2014 January 4 2015 Technology Free Zone To sustain a quiet contemplative environment visitors are asked to not use their cell phones laptops tablets cameras and other electronic devices while inside the building Guided Tours Docent led tours are offered every Tuesday at 10 00 am Please meet at Windhover s entrance door Tours are open to the public No reservations are required but space is limited to 15 per tour Private tours are not available Due to University winter closure there will not be tours on December 23 and December 30 Meter visitor parking spots 1 50 hour are located along Santa Teresa Street meters
