    2015 Patricia Blessing Patricia Blessing Visiting Adjunct Faculty Lecturer Fall 2014 Art History About Patricia Blessing completed her PhD in the Department of Art and Archaeology at Princeton University in 2012 Her forthcoming book Rebuilding Anatolia after the Mongol Conquest Islamic Architecture in the Lands of Rūm 1240 1330 investigates the relationship between patronage politics and architectural style after the Mongol conquest Blessing s publications include Recording the Transformation of Urban Landscapes in Turkey The Diaries of Kurt Erdmann and Ernst Diez in Studies in Travel Writing and entries in the Encyclopedia of the Bible and its Reception Berlin De Gruyter In addition to her experience as an art historian Blessing has excavated in Syria Uzbekistan and Turkey and interned in museum collections Blessing completed undergraduate work in Near Eastern Studies art history and comparative literature in Geneva Switzerland and Bamberg Germany and received her M A from Princeton in 2009 Currently Blessing works at the Stanford Humanities Center and teaches courses on Islamic art and medieval history at Stanford University Contact Phone 650 724 8106 Email pblessin stanford edu My Website Office Hours Mondays 2 00 4 00PM Office Humanities Center Room 146 About Department Overview People Works Contact

  • Mark Brest van Kempen | Department of Art & Art History
    Land Exchange at the National Academy of Art in China his work explores the range of emotions and issues that are embodied in our complex relationship to the environment land and place He has received numerous commissions for permanent public art projects including the San Francisco Art Commission the City of Palo Alto the City of Seattle the Haas Foundation and was recently invited by the German government to submit designs for a national reunification monument in Leipzig He has spoken around the country and abroad on the possibilities of creating artwork that functions outside the museum gallery context and that brings aesthetic and symbolic meaning to everyday situations His work has been presented in several books including Lucy Lippard s The Lure of the Local and Peter Selz s Art of Engagement as well as many publications including Time Magazine The New York Times Art in America and the LA Times Exit Art in New York The Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena and The Richmond Art Center have featured his performance project Living From Land in which he lived entirely from the land in a wilderness area for one month Brest van Kempen was Artist in Residence

    was born and educated in Zürich Switzerland and holds a MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute He has taught photography at the California College of the Arts the San Francisco Art Institute and at Stanford University since 1993 His photographs have been shown in Europe Egypt Columbia and the United States Lukas Felzmann s early works were Installations with Sculptures and Photographs More recently the work has focused on photography with a special interest in bookmaking and publishing Lukas Felzmann s first Monograph Landfall was published in 2004 by Lars Muller Publishers and was accompanied by a retrospective at the Fotostiftung Schweiz in Winterthur Among recent work has been a photographic exploration of the Sacramento Valley as place and as metaphor by documenting a marsh altered through agriculture In the work images and ideas about landscape as well as natural and cultural conditions intersect This work resulted in two large monographs both published by Lars Muller Publishers in 2009 and 2011 The two books form a conceptual pair with the first one Waters in Between with texts by John Berger looking down at the conditions on the ground The second one Swarm with texts by Deborah Gorden and Wallace Stevens among others looks up at the movements of flocks of birds A fourth book Helix with a text by Edgar Allen Poe was published by Cavallo Point in 2009 Lukas Felzmann is interested in all forms of cultural expressions particularly music the visual arts architecture bookmaking and how they intersect with the natural world His teaching embraces both digital and analogue tools and is strongly influenced by his practice as an artist Contact Email felzmann stanford edu Office Hours by appointment Research Interests Architecture Art Science Contemporary Art Digital Art Drawing Electronic Art European Art Experimental Media Art Installation
