  • MFA Design Admission | Department of Art & Art History
    student products made exclusively from recycled materials developed mobile applications to help people understand healthy food choices at the point of purchase We also accept students who use more traditional design skills in innovative projects of their own passion Recently accepted students with backgrounds in textile design jewelry design architecture and sculpture have each illustrated a particular social or aesthetic problem they were addressing with their work Typically we are not looking for standard graphic design or interaction design candidates unless their work illustrates a unique conceptual or innovative bent Use the portfolio application to illustrate your particular creative vision and accomplishments Specific submission details are listed in Portfolio Application section below Life Experience Applicants for an MFA in Design must have a minimum of one year s life experience after undergraduate work prior to applying to the Graduate Design Program The average time out of college before applying is about 4 years The Art Department is looking for mature students who bring significant life or work experience and ideas to share with the community here How has your experience prepared you to tackle design issues in a unique way What will you contribute to the community here that you bring from your previous experience Use the Statement of Purpose in the University application materials to explain why you are ready to attend graduate school and why you think you are a good fit for the Stanford Graduate Design Program 1 University Application To apply for an MFA in Design you must first apply through the Stanford Graduate Admissions website Start the University Application here The following documents are required by Stanford University and can not be waived please click on the links for more detailed information about each Statement of Purpose Important You must indicate in the first sentence of your Statement the program to which you are applying and the area you wish to study MFA in Design Three Letters of Recommendation Transcripts Follow the University Graduate Admissions instructions to upload one scanned version of your official transcript s in the online application DO NOT follow the Graduate Admissions instructions to send hard copies of your transcripts to the Art Department Hard copies will be required ONLY if you are admitted Please see Transcripts for more information and guidelines on submitting official transcripts GRE scores GREs are required for ALL applicants A subject exam is not required Scores expire after five years Please see Required Exam s for more information TOEFL scores Required when first language is not English IELTS is not accepted Please see Required Exam s for more information including the minimum TOEFL requirements Application fee T he University application fee is 125 Please note application materials will not be returned nor released to another institution please keep a copy for your own record 2 Portfolio Application In addition to the University application materials listed above you are required to submit a portfolio online through Slideroom Start the Portfolio application here Please follow the Slideroom instructions

    Admission Degree Requirements Campus Visit MFA Documentary Film and Video Academic Opportunities Our Graduate Students Resources for graduate students currently enrolled in our programs Graduate Student Resources Campus Visit The Graduate Design Program holds Informational Sessions Campus Visits for prospective MFA and MS Design students two to three times each Fall usually during the month of October Prospective students are strongly encouraged to plan a trip to campus to attend one of the informational sessions These meetings will offer the chance to meet faculty visit with current students in the program tour the Design Loft and ask questions about the admissions process Graduate Design Program 2014 Info Sessions Friday October 3 2014 Friday October 31 2014 RSVP Schedule Each info session starts at 9 45 am with a discussion and Q A with faculty from both the Art Department and Mechanical Engineering Department and the Student Service Officers involved in the admissions process We discuss the Design Program what we are looking for in the admissions process etc This is followed by a tour of the d school optional and lunch on your own After lunch you can have an informal chat with current Graduate Design students and tour the Design Loft Location Meet at 9 45am at Building 550 also known as the Peterson Building 416 Escondido Mall Stanford CA 94305 Parking Reach campus at least 20 minutes ahead of time to allow time to find parking and walk to Building 550 Campus parking meters accept quarters and many parking areas have pay stations or meters that accept credit cards See the visitor parking map for more information Campus Visits Due to the overwhelming interest in the Graduate Design Program we are not able to offer individual campus tours or visits with faculty For information about general campus tours
