    Courtesy Emeriti Visiting Faculty and Lecturers Graduate Students Staff About the Department Zhijian Qiao Zhijian Qiao Field East Asia M A East Asian Studies Stanford University B A Chinese Literature Fudan University Zhijian Qiao known among his friends as George studies socioeconomic history of late imperial and modern China After graduating from Fudan University s classical Chinese literature program in Shanghai he began his graduate studies in the field of Early China at Stanford An unexpected encounter with merchant mansions in North China s Shanxi Province led him switch from the studies of Han Dynasty Confucianism to the business culture and socioeconomic history of late imperial North China a jump over two thousand years He is currently working on his dissertation that chronicles the rise of the Shanxi merchants during the Qing Dynasty 1644 1912 who created the most powerful business network that China had ever witnessed prior to the modern times In his spare time he enjoys traveling photography watching soccer and reading classical Chinese poems Research Interests Socioeconomic history of late imperial and modern China Merchants and early modern empires Business history Comparative and world history Interdisciplinary approaches to history About About the Department Degree Programs Undergraduate Program

    History Related Events People Faculty Courtesy Emeriti Visiting Faculty and Lecturers Graduate Students Staff About the Department Stephanie Quinn Stephanie Quinn Field Africa B A Bucknell University 2010 Stephanie came to Stanford in fall 2012 to pursue a Ph D in African history She is researching competing visions of development for northern Namibia during Namibia s struggle for independence from South Africa in the 1960s 70s and 80s Her most recent work concerns the history of bantustan development policies such as those of the Bantu Investment Corporation of South Africa and their impacts on structures of economic and political opportunity for Africans She aspires to understand not just how South African and UN policies shaped political and socioeconomic structures but how Namibian men and women themselves conceived of and sought out economic advancement and success Before coming to Stanford Stephanie worked as an English teacher in Namibia in the U S Peace Corps and prior to that she earned a B A in history and creative writing at Bucknell University In her free time she enjoys playing the clarinet running and dancing Contact Email sequinn2 stanford edu About About the Department Degree Programs Undergraduate Program Graduate Programs Courses People Faculty
