  • Thirty Years of Beautiful Music | Stanford Live
visits Costa Mesa Los Angeles Santa Barbara Rohnert Park Urbana and Quebec in addition to regular orchestra appearances in Palo Alto San Francisco and Berkeley Clearly Nicholas McGegan has made it big time Whether he would have become so well known without the orchestra whose sound and interpretive acumen he has honed so beautifully however is open to conjecture The sequence of events that initiated his Philharmonia tenure began over 30 years ago when he was teaching at the Oberlin Conservatory When one of his students Bruce Brown went on to study in the early music program at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music with Laurette Goldberg founder of Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra Brown sang McGegan s praises Soon thereafter McGegan received an invitation to give a talk at the conservatory Philharmonia was still in diapers he quips That means it was run by four orchestra members who had commandeered a spare bedroom in the back of soprano Judith Nelson s home as their office Not long after Goldberg invited McGegan back to guest conduct Philharmonia he was recruited as music director THE MCGEGAN RECORDING LEGACY Under McGegan s leadership Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra initiated a series of landmark recordings with Harmonia Mundi USA Most included Peter McGrath as recording engineer Central to that discography was Handel s Susanna Nominated for a Grammy Award and recipient of a Gramophone Award it was one of many recordings that paired McGegan and PBO with the late extraordinary violist turned soprano turned mezzo soprano Lorraine Hunt Lieberson McGegan s praise for this irreplaceable artist is characteristic of his generosity of spirit and reverence for art She was the most passionate singer I have ever heard he told me at the time of her death from cancer in 2006 I was just amazed that she could transform the simple notes on the page into such ravishing and heartfelt music It took one s breath away One of the highlights of my entire life was performing Berlioz s Les nuits d été with her in 1995 Onstage she was absolutely electrifying Whatever the emotion of the music she made you feel it to the utmost degree I feel so lucky to have known and worked with her Recordings with a number of labels followed culminating in the orchestra s self release of Scarlatti s Cecilian Vespers and Beethoven s Symphony No 9 Then have come so far eight titles on the orchestra s own label PBP including the Grammy nominated recording of Haydn s Symphonies 104 88 and 101 Central to the recording legacy is McGegan s relationship with recording producer and engineer David v R Bowles of Swineshead Productions Bowles who is also McGegan s husband is the man who resurrected and beautifully restored Hunt Lieberson s Handel and Berlioz recordings from the archives where they had languished on DAT and cassette Well before that he played cello on a 1990 recording of Bach s Notebook for Anna Magdalena that also included Hunt Lieberson s vocals
