  • Stanford Live Five: Stephen Hinton | Stanford Live
ealth in Kurt Weill s The Seven Deadly Sins in preparation for Stanford Philharmonia Orchestra s May 10 performance of the piece Stephen recently took some time to answer a few questions as part of the Stanford Live Five Series If you could trade lives with any performer or artist living or dead who would it be and why Fritz Wunderlich Listen to his voice and you ll know why But I would try to be more careful about going down stairs What are your favorite guilty pleasure artists to watch or listen to Jeff Beck the legendary rock guitarist It s more about pleasure than guilt though What are you reading or listening to right now I m in the middle of a busy quarter so pretty much everything I read is connected to teaching I just finished re reading Eduard Hanslick s influential tract On the musically beautiful 1854 for a critical theory class As for listening I m obsessed with Irmgard Seefried s recording of Mozart s Abendempfindung I ve lost count of the number of times I ve cued it up recently And anything by Fritz Wunderlich of course What was your favorite class in college During a study year abroad I attended Carl Dahlhaus s lectures at the Technische Universität Berlin They had a huge impact on how I thought about music history and the profession of musicology in general What s your hidden talent If I told you it wouldn t be a hidden talent The free panel discussion on the the ethics of wealth in Kurt Weill s The Seven Deadly Sins will be held at 4 00 pm on Friday May 9 in the Bing Concert Hall Studio Moderator Stephen Hinton is faculty director of the Stanford Arts Institute and the Arts
