  • Miracles and Milestones | Stanford Live
for you and to do fun concerts but he s very clear about his choice of Dvořák s Bagatelles and Viola Quintet and their perfect complement Martinů s String Quartet No 5 Bottom line both SLSQ cellist Chris Costanza and departing second violinist St John love Dvořák and his Viola Quintet is one of St John s favorite pieces The choice of Dvořák s incredible beautiful and evocative Bagatelles revolves around its call for a harmonium an uncommonly encountered pedal organ that Stanford has in its instrument collection In this performance Stanford University organist will join the SLSQ on the harmonium Kronos Fills in the Blanks Kronos founder and first violinist David Harrington takes responsibility for spearheading the quartet s astounding 800 plus commissions Among them are five pieces on the seven work Stanford program including the two Bay Area premieres Philip Glass String Quartet No 6 which Kronos premiered in October in Vancouver and Valentin Silvestrov s String Quartet No 3 which it premiered two years ago in London Community is at the heart of Kronos which Harrington formed in order to play a piece for quartet that addresses the Vietnam War George Crumb s Black Angels 1970 I m trying to fill in some of the blanks that exist in the world of the string quartet as an art form he says I would like the work that Kronos does now and in the future to ask a lot of questions about the world that we re a part of and how we might be able to energize ourselves through music to give us the strength and energy to solve some of the problems that exist in the world we share Harrington s history with one of the works on the program the hauntingly sad love song Tusen Tankar A Thousand Thoughts reflects his seemingly insatiable appetite for musical discovery He first encountered the song on a recording by the Swedish group Triakel where singer Emma Härdelin was supported by violin and yes harmonium When I first discovered the recording I could not stop listening he reports I must have listened to it 30 times in whatever airport I was in and I realized that Kronos had to play it Our arrangement has no words and we ve figured out a way to make the viola and cello sound like a harmonium John Sherba takes the vocal part and I take the fiddle part We include it in our concerts because it s so magnificently beautiful Equally revealing of Harrington s process is the program s arrangement of Wagner s Prelude from Tristan und Isolde by Harrington s friend Aleksandra Vrebalov While I was on tour my wife went three times to Lars von Trier s film Melancholia he reports I d never known her to ever see a film three times So when I got home I asked her if she wanted to see it a fourth time I could not believe it I d known Wagner
