    offers rent subsidies for low income or at risk families that qualify Libby Hayes executive director of Homes for Families said it s a priority for the state and advocacy groups alike to get families out of hotel situations and while the reliance on hotels for shelter is lessening it s not happening quickly enough It s not as fast as we would like she said The state has been using hotels on and off for the past 32 years Hayes said As recently as 2005 there were zero families placed in hotels but after the recession there was an increase in homelessness and hotels began being rented out again in 2007 Hayes said This particular time has been the highest number of families and the longest time we ve been in the hotels Hayes said There are over 60 families staying in the hotel in Weymouth where Nolasco and her family are placed Nolasco is focused on getting out of the hotel and into a permanent housing situation not only for her son and boyfriend but also for her 23 year old daughter and grandson who are now staying with a friend Her daughter Iris has a job in Boston and is in the National Guard but is living with a friend who has asked her to start looking for another place to stay I m just concerned with my grandson That s why I m trying to hurry and get a place Nolasco said She said she s sent out over 50 applications for housing units and because of a lottery system she is number four on the waiting list for housing She s anticipating getting out of the hotel in the next few months It s a waiting game but you have to put your mind strength and soul into it to make something happen she said Finding housing Kesdy Baille and her two children eight year old Escher and nine year old Joanna Baille did not want to disclose her children s last names to protect their privacy lived in the Rodeway Inn in Brockton one of the hotels slated to be phased out for two years after fleeing an abusive relationship in a different state While Baille was grateful to have been provided with a place to stay she said her room was not a healthy environment for her children It was terrible to be completely honest If I had to say it was better than having to stay on the street because I had a place to lay my head however the conditions were terrible Baille said She said the hotel room she stayed in had black mold brown water and stains on the beds Baille also had no access to a kitchen so she wasn t able to cook for her children The only food she was able to keep had to fit in a mini fridge If I wanted to go to the grocery store and buy a gallon of milk it

    Gallery H O P E Service Immersion Program Community Service Post Graduate Service Community Based Learning The Life You Change Will Be Your Own Changing the world might seem like a daunting goal but it s something Stonehill students do every day in ways big and small Athletics Recreational Sports NCAA Athletics Recreational Sports A Tradition of Athletic Excellence The Stonehill Skyhawks compete in the Northeast 10 Conference the largest NCAA Division II conference in the country Home Giving Good as Gold The Gold Scholarship Good as Gold The GOLD Scholarship Stonehill is now sporting a new GOLD standard GOLD Graduates Of the Last Decade alumni have established a GOLD Scholarship to benefit a junior or senior Eva Weinstein 17 Eva and other Student Phonathon Callers Previous Next Ways to Give Annual Giving Gift Planning Leadership Giving Scholarship Giving Corporate Foundation Relations Contact Contact Info Office of Development Stonehill College 320 Washington Street Easton MA 02357 6242 508 565 1341 development stonehill edu Make a Gift Support the GOLD Scholarship The GOLD Scholarship was awarded for the first time in the 2012 2013 academic year The 2015 2016 recipient is Eva Weinstein 17 who is pursuing a major in Biology Weinstein was selected for meeting the GOLD Scholarship criteria including Rising junior or senior GPA of at least 3 0 Demonstrated financial need Commitment to the Stonehill community Eva is a biology major following the pre med track and while she hasn t quite decided what type of medicine she ll practice down the road she is taking full advantage of the many opportunities to explore her options as a Stonehill student Currently Eva is working on an independent research project under the direction of Gregory Maniero Associate Professor of Biology Together they are exploring the immune system of frogs and the manner in which immune function changes in the face of environmental challenges Eva also serves as a TA for a Cell Biology course where she works as both a lab assistant and a resource for students as they work to understand the material Simply put she says I love being around science and Eva reported that the robust science program world class facilities and readily accessible faculty were all major reasons that she chose Stonehill In the spring of 2016 Eva will be taking her talents to the other side of the globe as she studies abroad in South Africa through a School for International Training SIT program An internship during the summer of 2015 at the South End Community Health Center in Boston inspired her to pursue a program of study anchored in community health and public policy while abroad Aside from her coursework Eva will additionally be responsible for a personal research project as well In the context of what is globally considered the largest and most high profile epidemic of HIV Eva has chosen to explore questions surrounding access and treatment for these South African patients Outside the classroom Eva also expresses her passion for
