    Recreational Sports NCAA Athletics Recreational Sports A Tradition of Athletic Excellence The Stonehill Skyhawks compete in the Northeast 10 Conference the largest NCAA Division II conference in the country Home News Media Finnegan s Legacy Honored with Professorship Finnegan s Legacy Honored with Professorship July 8 2015 Previous Next Professors Richard Finnegan and Anna Ohanyan at the launch of the Distinguished Richard B Finnegan Professorship in Political Science and International Relations Legend and legacy are terms thrown around in higher education and elsewhere often with too much ease and too little reflection But in the case of retiring Stonehill faculty member Richard Finnegan 64 these sobriquets ring true Accomplished Record In recognition of all that Finnegan accomplished as a teacher scholar author administrator ambassador and mentor for scores of students over almost five decades the College has honored him by creating the Distinguished Richard B Finnegan Professorship in Political Science and International Relations Fellow political scientist Professor Anna Ohanyan is the first faculty member to hold the position Stonehill has been a portal for me to worlds that I could never have anticipated that I would inhabit said Finnegan at a June dinner in his honor I am grateful and truly moved that this occasion has also afforded me a private opportunity to reflect on the work itself the time in front of the classrooms full of students or alone at my research and writing The miles logged and hours clocked The day by day carrying of these years that began with hitchhiking as a freshman from my parents house in Dorchester to class at Stonehill and have taken me so many more places since The gratification I found in studying in teaching and in the simplicity of working my hardest at them After receiving his BA from Stonehill in 1964 Finnegan returned to the College as a member of the Political Science Department in 1968 He was the founder of the International Studies program and the Irish Studies program and served as department chair director of the Honors Program and dean of the faculty Author and Scholar The author or co author of six books Finnegan was awarded the Moreau Medal for Distinguished Contribution to the College on the occasion of its 50th anniversary in 1998 He has been a visiting scholar at Harvard University where he taught a course on Irish Politics and University College Dublin He has received grants from the Fulbright Program National Science Foundation Department of Education National Endowment for the Humanities and the Whiting Foundation It is a challenge to distill Richard s productive and compassionate life to a few minutes but I do want to highlight that Richard leads a life that is simply uncontained by geographic disciplinary or organizational boundaries said Ohanyan in remarks at the event honoring Finnegan His departure leaves a big void in our department And this goes beyond Richard s course offerings his research and teaching It is much more than that His humility reflection and compassion to

    Stonehill s track record in transformative education and its forward looking ideas about how to help each student create a successful college and post graduate blueprint the College has been awarded a major grant to enhance its current mentorship and advisement outreach to students This September the two year 233 800 grant from the Davis Educational Foundation will allow Stonehill to launch Think Act Lead A Path to Each Student s Story an expanded college wide integrated academic professional personal and spiritual mentoring program As a relatively small college we are already very student centered Thanks to the Davis grant we can now refine and enhance our mentorship model providing more one on one attention to individual students and going deeper in how we engage them with the range of faculty and staff expertise Moreover with Think Act Lead we will be working with students from their first to their last day at Stonehill to make sure they are fully prepared for life and career after graduation explained Dean of Academic Achievement Craig Almeida who will co lead the project with Dean of Students Kevin Piskadlo After four years of participating in Think Act Lead each student will be able to answer the question Who am I and how have my experiences shaped the person I am today The program s three stages are THINK From the moment they arrive on campus students will be engaged in thoughtful conversations Faculty and staff will encourage them to explore who they are and to articulate their academic professional personal and spiritual goals Students will be challenged and mentored on how to connect with peers faculty and staff so that they can be more effective in taking the initiative in charting their own course in college and in life ACT Students will plan their growth through a course of study and co curricular experiences This course of action will allow them to pursue evolving interests reflect on them in a meaningful way discuss them with others and determine what experiences should be next Strategically constructed the plan will contain required and desired courses as well as co curricular experiences integral to the student s development It will allow students to better understand and visualize the possibilities ahead and what they need to do in order to achieve their goals LEAD Each student will acquire skills qualifications competencies and confidence that will enable him her to secure and assume positions of leadership Students who desire to hone their leadership abilities will have the opportunity to participate in a new leadership certification program that the College will be offering A goal of Think Act Lead is that each senior will be able to state what the appropriate next step is for him or her after graduation The deliberate evaluative and strategic process a student uses to plan his or her academic and co curricular path will be critical in preparing for life after Stonehill and will enhance the likelihood for success said Almeida The Path
