  • W & C Courses | University Writing Center
    as it would have during the regular fall or spring semesters Can a W or C course be taught Pass Fail Yes It is expected that the course will have the same requirements for writing or oral communication as it would have during the regular fall or spring semesters Can I test out of the W C course requirement No Can I substitute a course from another school for the W C course requirement Yes You can ask your academic advisor for help with the necessary paperwork to request a that a course taken at another institution of higher learning count as the W C course requirement The request must go through your advisor and college and you may need to supply a syllabus or course description The Associate Provost for Undergraduate Studies will review the course to ensure it meets all the requirements for a W C course These are listed below What does a course need to include to be designated a W The basic requirements for a W Course are as follows requires writing related to the students major provides instruction in writing and feedback that allows for the improvement of major assignments bases a percentage of the final course grade on writing quality about 25 for a 4 credit course 33 for a 3 credit course and 75 for a one credit course requires a minimum of 2000 words about 8 pages double spaced bases less than 30 of the percentage of the grade based on writing quality on collaborative writing What does a course need to include to be designated as C The basic requirements for a C Course are as follows requires writing and speaking or other form of oral communication related to the students major provides instruction in writing and speaking and feedback that allows for the improvement of major assignments bases a percentage of the final course grade on writing or speaking quality about 25 for a 4 credit course 33 for a 3 credit course and 75 for a one credit course requires a minimum of 1500 words of writing and 5 minutes of oral communication bases less than 30 of the percentage of the grade based on writing quality on collaborative writing or speaking What are the goals of the Communications in the Disciplines program Texas A M students will write and speak in public with proficiency upon graduation Proficiency requires a solid knowledge of rhetorical precepts such as audience awareness and ability to suit the occasion or type of document being produced A proficient communicator argues well thinks critically and solves problems A proficient communication can analyze evaluate synthesize information from various sources document and cite properly and organize text logically Skill with grammar mechanics format and usage is required Texas A M students will master the forms of writing and speaking most commonly associated with and essential to their major field of study Proficient communications skills cannot be learned once in the isolation of a single First Year
