    the absence of the Chief Supervises patrols of all zones of the city places of business and residential districts to ensure efficient and effective enforcement of city ordinances state and federal laws Monitors investigations of suspected crimes report findings and arrests of suspected individuals in order to spot trends and to provide input to subordinates for more efficient operations Monitors investigations of accidents involving persons or property documentation and reports of probable cause of accidents and courses of action taken by subordinates to spot trends and provide input to subordinates for more efficient operations Notifies and gives status reports to the Chief of Police and the Commissioner of Fire and Police of serious instances Organizes coordinates and documents all POST training maintains personnel files for the department and handles other general paperwork regarding training uniforms billings etc Establishes good working relationships with other employees other departments other public safety agencies the City Commission and the public Maintains attendance records to assure proper scheduling for three shifts per day and proper payroll disbursements Accepts secures maintains and accounts for contraband and evidence confiscated by department personnel maintains a computer record and assures protection of the chain of custody Receives and returns calls from the general public other departments other personnel regarding requests for information or services Advises shift supervisors and other officers of trouble spots potentially dangerous situations or unusual trends that could develop or that need monitoring Reviews the status of vehicles equipment and building assigns monitoring and maintenance duties to other personnel and notifies the Chief as to any associated problems Communicates on a daily basis with the Chief Major and other officers to assure efficient and effective operations ADDITIONAL EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED Responds to dispatched calls as required Assists the Chief of Police in formulating and prescribing the work methods policies and procedures to be followed by the department Cooperates with individuals from the county state federal and other jurisdictions in order to achieve common goals Assists the Chief of Police in administration of the department Assists the Chief of Police in performing formal and in service training programs for departmental personnel Monitors the Law Enforcement Training Network and tapes training related programs for use by other department personnel Performs related work as required REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES Knowledge of the principles and practices of modern police organization operations supervision and administration Knowledge of the practices methods and equipment used in crime investigations and the identification and preservation of physical evidence Knowledge of the use and computerization of police records and their application to police administration and solution of police problems Knowledge of firearms batons stun guns and other defensive equipment and measures to provide personal safety and safety to others Knowledge of modern supervisory practices and procedures Knowledge of the geographic area of the City Knowledge of City ordinances state and federal laws and supreme court rulings that affect law enforcement Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other city officials county state and
