  • The Historical Jesus: Lecture One
    is known as the Third Quest Participants in this enquiry are often called Questers by those in the know The presupposition of all three of these quests is that the Gospels are not historical accounts of the life of Jesus of Nazareth Rather they are theological treatises or sermons The life of Jesus then must be rediscovered by examining critically the Gospels for the historical nuggets buried under the theological layers That is a separate study as well As the student is aware there are some questers who see Jesus as a cynic philosopher and others who see him as an apocalyptic prophet In the pages which follow neither of these courses will be taken Rather Jesus is seen here as a citizen of both the Greek and the Jewish worlds He is both wise man and prophet He is revolutionary and conservative In short he simply refuses to be categorized in either camp The Historical Jesus In what follows our procedure will be simple we will examine those events and words from the life of the Historical Jesus which can be historically verified What cannot be proven historically will not be considered This clearly does not mean that the things not discussed did not happen rather it means that they are beyond the ability of historical reconstruction to verify For instance we will not consider the birth or resurrection of Jesus Though these events happened so far as I am concerned in essentially the way the Biblical record states still they cannot be proven and therefore will not be discussed The student should not be mislead into thinking that I do not believe these events Instead the student should realize that ultimate matters are for good reason beyond the grasp of historical research We are saved by faith after

    and the crooked shall be made straight and the rough ways made smooth and all flesh shall see the salvation of God The story of the historical Jesus begins with his baptism in the Jordan by John the Baptizer John s mission was according to Crossan to revitalize Judaism by calling its children to renew their covenant with God by essentially re enacting the entrance of Israel into Canaan through the Jordan The baptism practiced by John was in fact a re enactment which was intended to involve the common Israelite in his or her traditional religion Judaism The reason for this re enactment was the fact that many if not most of the Jews in Palestine at the first quarter of the first century were not practicing their religion John was thus calling them on again to faithful participation in the faith of Abraham As a Jew who was interested in the religion of the fathers Jesus was naturally interested in the work of John Quite naturally also he would have gone into the wilderness to join hands with those involved in the revival of Judaism which John enjoined He too would have sensed the need to identify with the people of the covenant by being baptized as a sign of solidarity with his fellow revivalists In short there is nothing problematical in regards to either the partici pation of Jesus in Johdentification with other Jews by baptism For in short that baptism was a re dedicatory act and not a salvific act That later gospel writers described it as a baptism for the remission of sins fits well with the evangelists theology but not with the historical circumstances nor the goals of John s baptism itself Q the source of the materials used in this reconstruction of the

    fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire The message preached by John is summarized by Q True relationship to God is not based on ancestral connection but by personal commitment John thus calls his hearers to rely not on their DNA but on their own dependence on God This message would have been very attractive to Jesus who had grown up in Nazareth a stones throw from the great Roman city of Sepphoris There in Sepphoris Jesus had seen first hand the results of Roman decadence and how that had influenced his own neighbors and friends Living so close to a Roman city would have proven far too powerful for many of Jesus schoolmates who would have been attracted to the pagan lifestyle enjoyed by those more enlightened citizens of the great metropolis Abandoning the faith of the fathers many of Jesus contemporaries probably became Romans in faith and practice John answered all of them by saying I baptize you with water but one who is more powerful than I is coming I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire His winnowing fork is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his granary but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire As John preached this message something within Jesus resonated and he knew that it was he Further he knew that he had been commissioned by God to carry out the messianic task To learn what this task was he would simply have drawn on the Old Testament texts which he interpreted as messianic The remarkable thing here is that he did not drawn on the texts which describe the messiah as the victorious conqueror but on

    who suggest that the kingdom is a future reality which will be brought in at the end of time This approach I think is to misread Jesus To be sure many in the early Church after the death of Jesus pushed the kingdom into the future by making it a spiritual realm But so far as I can tell for Jesus himself the kingdom was at hand and anything at hand cannot be 2000 years off in the distance In any event Jesus taught that destitution was not the worst thing that could happen to a person The worst thing that could happen was to be uninvolved in the kingdom of God So he pronounces blessed all those who though poor in things were rich in grace In this way Jesus was able to supplant the materialism of his day and of his people But I say to you that listen Love your enemies do good to those who hate you bless those who curse you pray for those who abuse you If anyone strikes you on the cheek offer the other also and from anyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt Give to everyone who begs from you and if anyone takes away your goods do not ask for them again Do to others as you would have them do to you If you love those who love you what credit is that to you For even sinners love those who love them If you do good to those who do good to you what credit is that to you For even sinners do the same If you lend to those from whom you hope to receive what credit is that to you Even sinners lend to sinners to receive as much again But

    wise people and not foolish people i40 After Jesus had finished all his sayings in the hearing of the people he entered Capernaum A centurion there had a slave whom he valued highly and who was ill and close to death When he heard about Jesus he sent some Jewish elders to him asking him to come and heal his slave When they came to Jesus they appealed to him earnestly saying He is worthy of having you do this for him for he loves our people and it is he who built our synagogue for us And Jesus went with them but when he was not far from the house the centurion sent friends to say to him Lord do not trouble yourself for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof therefore I did not presume to come to you But only speak the word and let my servant be healed f1 authority with soldiers under me and I say to one Go and he goes and to another Come and he comes and to my slave Do this and the slave does it When Jesus heard this he was amazed at him and turning to the crowd that followed him he said I tell you not even in Israel have I found such faith When those who had been sent returned to the house they found the slave in good health The healings of Jesus were according to Dom Crossan not so much physical restorations of health as the restoration of a place in society Then these re alignments of a social place brought about health In other words healing was restoration which then brought about physical health To understand this one must understand that in the world of Jesus illness made one unapproachable and socially an outcast Therefore Jesus 92 healings were the readmittance of the ill into the social structure In short Jesus simply told folk that they were part of the Kingdom and therefore not castaways any longer For many the beneficial result of this inclusion in a family was the fact that wellness came about because of their new sense of well being I think that is exactly what we have here Jesus declares one to be well in the sense that he need not worry that he is alone for he is no longer alone As a result happiness replaces sorrow and wellness replaces sickness This approach to the healings performed by Jesus allows one to continue asserting that Jesus healed people while at the same time it avoids the notion that Jesus was a magician or some kindred to modern day faith healers The disciples of John reported all these things to him So John summoned two of his disciples and sent them to the Lord to ask Are you the one who is to come or are we to wait for anoer When the men had come to him they said John the Baptist has sent us
