    we reflect on our blessings and how God continues to smile on Tougaloo We likewise are reminded of those who contribute to the vitality and viability of this special place with grateful hearts We extend warm holiday greetings from our hearts and hearth to yours We wish you all the joys of the season love happiness hope and peace We are experiencing an exciting academic year Our fall semester began in an encouraging way with an increase in student enrollment as many institutions continue to struggle with the reality of declining enrollment in this tough environment for higher education Our Enrollment Management team is ever vigilant in their efforts to attract the quality of students who will thrive in our academically rigorous environment of higher expectations opportunity and promise We were pleased to welcome new faculty and staff to what we refer to as the Tougaloo family This simply means that we wear the brand of unity for Tougaloo understand that we are part of the whole each part is significant in achieving our mission and desired outcomes for our students and support one another to ensure that our Tougaloo stands and prospers Whether we are trustees administrators faculty staff students or alumni in the collective we are Tougaloo Our national rankings remain very good and competitively on par or higher than many better resourced institutions The U S News World Report lists Tougaloo College among the top fifteen best HBCUs in the nation A new college ranking index done by the Educate to Career rated Tougaloo number 23 out of the 1 224 public and private institutions included in the survey for economic value with degree added Tougaloo also received the Best Value School Award which recognizes schools that offer quality education at an affordable cost and are highly regarded by their students The representative from the organization in presenting the award shared with me the in depth process they conduct with alumni and students to make the decision of the institutions to be recognized pointing out that this is an award institutions cannot buy they have to earn it The College has been approved to offer graduate degree education The first two graduate degree programs will be offered through the Division of Education the Master of Arts degree in Child Development and Master of Arts degree in Teaching which will begin in Spring 2015 and Fall 2015 We are expanding our academic offerings to include degree completion programs and professional certification programs for the nontraditional learners through a Weekend College under the auspices of the Division of Continuing Education We have been successful in securing grant funding to expand the learning and living opportunities for our students The Mellon Foundation recently approved funding for the Digital Humanities program that will facilitate the enhanced use of technology in teaching and learning A recent partnership with Mississippi State University has been formed in STEM education The Delta Health Partners program operating under the auspices of the Owens Health and Wellness

    follow We have experienced an invigorating spring semester Our graduating seniors are anticipating their next steps beyond these hallowed grounds Many of them have already received offers from graduate schools It was so rewarding to hear one of my students share the offers he had received and the process he used to decide on which to accept My students are entering a world replete with endless opportunities Without question they have been prepared to excel and empowered to change the world As an example Kisa Harris one of our Gates Millennium Scholars was recently selected as an All Star student by the White House Initiative for HBCUs Also four of our students have been named Mellon Undergraduate Fellows Garry W Bridgeman financial advisor and institutional consulting director for Graystone Consulting a business of Morgan Stanley was the speaker for our Annual Business Luncheon held on February 28 2014 The luncheon was well attended by corporate government and education officials Cullen Dubose and James W Loewen were inducted into the Society of Corporate Philanthropy comprised of individuals who have made major contributions to the College of 100 000 or more The Chairman s Award was presented to Former Supreme Court Justice and Tougaloo alumnus Reuben V Anderson for unrelenting dedication to his alma mater Our Concert Choir experienced a successful spring tour in Detroit Chicago and Memphis during March The Choir was absolutely magnificent The students are some of our best ambassadors telling the Tougaloo story through songs evidenced in their poise composure good manners effective communication respect civility discipline confidence and unmistaken intelligence We applaud Dr Kathy Castilla for her excellent work in directing these remarkable young people Our alumni in all three areas were the front end planners and on the ground organizers Our alumni are sources of truly amazing inspiration for our students The Commencement Ceremony is scheduled for Sunday May 18 2014 at 10 00 a m on the campus green and this year s speaker is Dr Christina Hull Paxson President of Brown University May 2014 marks the 50 th anniversary for the Brown Tougaloo Partnership The Baccalaureate Service will be held at 8 00 a m in Woodworth Chapel and The Reverend Dr Marcus Cosby Pastor of Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church in Houston Texas will be the speaker We invite you to join us for both events and bear witness to the flock of new eagles Tougaloo will release to soar without boundaries As we continue to commemorate the season of the 50 th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Movement Tougaloo College will present the Two Rivers Gala Tougaloo Honors on Saturday May 31 2014 at the Jackson Convention Center beginning at 7 00 p m This year s honorees are Attorney Isaac Byrd Businessman LeRoy Walker Philanthropist and Humanitarian Ruth Batson posthumously and former Chaplain at Brown University and Humanitarian Charlie Baldwin posthumously The commemoration of this transformative period in America s history is not only about paying homage to our past it is

    During this amazing time of the year we pause for a moment to warmly embrace the spirit of hope peace and goodwill that is so evident during this special holiday season It is also a time as the year ends that we also reflect on our challenges and accomplishments with hearts of gratitude As always my thoughts go toward the heart of our mission educating and graduating the women and men who we will empower to change the world The business of education is about the creation of the future Every day at our colleges and universities around the globe we prepare and inspire those upon whom we will depend to lead in the future and manage the processes that will impact our well being What an awesome and rewarding responsibility We are proud of our sustaining legacy spanning 144 years of producing outstanding leaders who have contributed immensely to a global democracy We see the results of our collective investments paying dividends through the lives and good works of our alumni who are the educators physicians policy makers lawyers business leaders scientists and other public servants as they use their education to effect constructive change in our global society Our well established legacy of excellence relevance and influence that continues today is as impactful in this 21 st century as it was during the 19 th and 20 th centuries A Tougaloo education is indeed timeless and still serves as any student s passport to success Two of our current students Melvin Smith class of 2014 and Margie Rayford a junior recently won 1 st place awards at the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students ABRCMS based on their research in the fields of Public Health and Epidemiology respectively This conference was attended by over 350 institutions ranging from small private colleges to Ivy League schools and major medical and research schools More than 1 500 students from across the United States participated and competed in poster and oral presentations in twelve disciplines of biomedical and behavioral sciences including mathematics Melvin and Margie were exceptionally outstanding among a sea of other outstanding students We congratulate them for their strong performances as well as the dedicated work of their professors and advisors Bradley Hall class of 2014 is a two time 2 nd place winner in the Black College Quiz Competition In Jeopardy style fashion this competition brings together some of the brightest minds from our HBCUs to showcase their knowledge of a wide array of subject areas As you can see the legacy continues From one of our first baccalaureate degree recipients Traverse Crawford the grandfather of famed actor Avery Brooks to Dr Aaron Shirley 55 founder of the Jackson Medical Mall and the 2013 recipient of the Lifetime Achievement award from the National Black Alumni Hall of Fame to astrophysicist Dr Hakeem Oluseyi 91 to White House Fellow Shirlethia Franklin 04 to the amazingly gifted class of 2014 Tougaloo College has consistently produced America s leadership class
