  • Lead a Proseminar — Institute for Social Sciences
    research and graduate training is exposure to cutting edge methods and concepts Example topics for an ISS Proseminar include statistics modeling simulation visualization network analysis qualitative coding creativity ethnography social media approaches and so on How it works Proseminars can be led by one or two faculty members meeting with participants weekly if jointly led or bi weekly otherwise Seminar time can be used for mini lectures demonstrations guest lectures workshops journal critiques presentations or co mentoring ISS Fellows are awarded 5 000 in research funding and given a small events budget to support regional visitors food and events A meeting room and scheduling assistance will be provided A webpage will be made for each proseminar featuring brief summaries of each class meeting ISS Fellows can choose to write these summaries themselves or enlist the help of graduate student participants The overall arrangement of the Proseminar is flexible but the minimum expectations are for ten total lecture hours per ISS Fellow This could include two Fellows lecturing for a total of 20 hours and each would be awarded the full amount in research funding Graduate students can earn course credit as a 298 group study at the rate of one credit for each proseminar weekly hour Proposals Proposals for ISS Proseminars totaling no more than 1 000 words should include the following information Proseminar title topic with a brief summary of the concept or methodology to be covered A description of the graduate students by discipline who may be interested in this topic concept or methodology and why Graduate students from outside the College of Letters and Science may also be included identified A rough outline of the kinds of activities that will happen in the proseminar including any outside speakers identified workshops trainings etc Please include a tentative schedule

    sets on an ongoing basis The Institute for Social Sciences recognizes that data needs are always changing We would like to help ensure that the research needs of social sciences faculty and graduate students at UC Davis are being met and to that end would like to know what new data needs our researchers have The Social Sciences Data Service is an incorporated part of ISS and the institute works in partnership with SSDS staff and with Shields Library on this initiative We invite faculty in the social sciences to submit proposals that detail any unmet data needs Proposals should be no more than 1 000 words and should include the following information Name of dataset to purchase or name of membership which will allow access to key data Source of the data Cost if known Value data will have to the campus at large Potential users of the data in the social sciences and which research projects will be impacted helped by access Any other relevant information that will help us to assess the value of the data The ISS Executive Committee will evaluate proposals based primarily on how many people will benefit from having access Proposals may be

    The UC Davis Institute for Social Sciences ISS provides support to faculty of the UC Davis Division of Social Sciences DSS in preparing extramural grants for specific especially multidisciplinary research projects The ISS grant writer Belinda Martineau is available by appointment to work with individual faculty as well as teams of faculty on preparing research proposals for submission to funding agencies This grant writing support can include assistance with strategic planning such as help compiling pieces of the proposal narrative from collaborators across the social sciences or among DSS faculty and researchers in other academic disciplines as well as editing of initial drafts of applications and fine tuning proposal narratives before final submission Please contact Belinda if you d like this kind of help with your grant proposal Belinda and Yoke Dellenback Contracts Grants Manager at the DSS Research Service Center can also help DSS faculty find funding opportunities appropriate for their research projects Use the Resources pull down menu to find UC specific and Extramural Funding Opportunities as well as a Grants Calendar Once the decision has been made to pursue a funding opportunity Yoke is available to help most DSS faculty with the budget equipment personnel etc requirements of your application package as well as the submission process itself Administrative Services staff in the UC Davis Psychology Department provide grant and budget assistance to UC Davis faculty members affiliated with the Center for Mind and Brain CMB and the department of Psychology All proposals for extramural funding prepared by UC Davis researchers must be submitted through the Sponsored Programs unit of the campus Office of Research Limited submission pre proposals and pre proposals that do not require an institutional signature are exceptions to this rule Grant proposals for very large multi million dollar interdisciplinary research programs are coordinated
