  • Scholarships and Fellowships: An Introduction | FROGS | The University of Chicago
customized list Each FROGS entry will list a deadline eligiblity requirements a contact person and a URL for the program s official site The FROGS database is not completely comprehensive there are many new awards created each year and some established awards may not be listed Each FROGS How do I apply for fellowships Many scholarships require that applicants receive the endorsement or nomination of the College before applying If an institutional endorsement is required then the scholarship applicant will follow a set of campus application procedures before submitting final application to the funding agency Some scholarships permit only a limited number of applicants from each university and in many cases request formal letters which nominate those applicants as representatives of the school Individual FROGS listings will describe the application process for each award Do all Fellowships require nomination No the majority of the programs listed on FROGS accept applications directly from students and do not require official endorsement or nomination Students are still encouraged however to work with College Adivsers to prepare their application mateirals How time consuming is the typical fellowship application The amount of time required to prepare a competitive application varies from fellowship to fellowship but most will require a significant investment of time and effort In the case of the Rhodes and Fulbright students often spend several months revising their application materials It is important to consult with College Advisers throughout the process Can I apply for more than one scholarship Absolutely In fact it often makes sense to apply for multiple scholarships if you are already lining up letters of recommendation drafting a personal statement and gathering other materials I will be studying abroad during the campus deadline Can I still apply Certainly most of the application process is conducted electronically Students will need

  • General Scholarship Advice | FROGS | The University of Chicago
prepared student will not get any of these scholarships without strong recommendations Getting an A from a professor does not mean that she can write you a good recommendation Recommenders need to know who you are how you think what your interests and goals are The only way they can learn this is through one on one conversations so you need to use office hours To start out maybe you will go in and ask questions about the lecture or to get more information about something that was just touched on briefly Then go in to talk about paper topics you are considering and why Next you can go in and talk about sources you are using for the paper and issues you are wrestling with Then you can talk about future classes you should take in the area then about BA topics Finally you will be talking with them about grad programs they would recommend and fellowships you are thinking about applying for By the time you ask them for a recommendation they will have a lot to say about you Graduate student recommendations will not work for these sorts of scholarships nor will they work for graduate programs Instructor s recommendations generally don t carry as much weight as recommendations from professors Obviously it would be ideal if you had a letter from the professor on campus who is an expert in the field you are planning to pursue Experiences Just as a transcript tells the story of your academic career your resume tells the story of your experiences and through them your interests values and goals Get involved in things your really care about It is far better to be really involved in a few things than a little involved in a lot of things Scholarship committees
