  • The North American Thyroid Cancer Survivorship Study (NATCSS) | The University of Chicago
    American Thyroid Cancer Survivorship Study NATCSS The North American Thyroid Cancer Survivorship Study is a multicenter study designed by researchers at the University of Chicago to comprehensively evaluate the physical emotional and psychological impact of having thyroid cancer Incidence rates of thyroid cancer TC have increased substantially worldwide in the past several decades In a recent project we estimated that by 2019 thyroid cancer will be the 3 rd most common cancer in women of all ages and the second most common cancer in women under the age of 45 in the United States Statistics from the Canadian Cancer Society show that thyroid cancer is now the most frequently diangosed cancer in people between the ages of 15 29 in Canada The majority of these patients will live full lives after their diagnosis but they will need life long surveillance It is important that all aspects of thyroid cancer survivorship are well characterized such that appropriate tools and interventions can be developed to assist thyroid cancer survivors in the challenges that this cancer diagnosis poses Over the next several years NATCSS will work with with investigators across the United States and Canada in the establishment of a thyroid cancer survivorship cohort including participants from the University of Chicago The University of Arizona Harvard University Columbia University The University of Rochester The University of California at San Francisco McGill University the Thyroid Cancer Survivors Association Thyroid Cancer Canada and BiteMe Cancer The data collected from NATCSS will allow us to evaluate many different scientific questions relating the impact of thyroid cancer on survivor quality of life We hope that this project will lessen the cancer burden experienced by thyroid cancer survivors in the United States and beyond Your participation can vitally improve the overall health of persons with thyroid cancer their

    extensively on the descriptive trends for thyroid cancer and on potential environmental and hormone disrupting causes of thyroid cancer Prior to coming to the University of Chicago she was a post doctoral fellow at the National Cancer Institute in the Department of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics She received her graduate training at Yale University Her publications can be accessed here She can be reached at brisa uchicago edu or at 773 834 8699 Raymon H Grogan MD is a specialist in the surgical management of thyroid parathyroid and adrenal gland diseases He is an assistant professor of surgery at the University of Chicago aswell as the director of the endocrinesurgery research program He studies the underlying causes as well as surgical and oncologic outcomes of endocrine cancers with a particular focus on thyroid cancer Dr Grogan is also a junior faculty Bucksbaum scholar at the University of Chicago As such he also has an interest in studying the doctor patient relationship As a surgeon one aspect of this relationship that Dr Grogan is particularly interested in is understanding how surgeons can better communicate and care for patients after they have had their surgery Prior to coming to the University of Chicago he completed his general surgery residency training at Stanford University in California followed by two years of fellowship training in endocrine surgery at the University of California San Francisco Dr Grogan also completed three years of basic science and outcomes based research during his training years in California His publications can be accessed here He can be reached at rgrogan surgery bsd uchicago edu or at 773 702 7125 Related Links PARTICIPATE IN THE STUDY American Information Information on Thyroid Cancer from the National Institutes of Health Information on Cancer Survivorship from the National Cancer Institute Office of Cancer

    project because you have previously participated in thyroid cancer research or because you belong to a survivorship organization 5 How will you follow up with participants over time Participants will be contacted every two to three years to obtain updated contact and health information as necessary 6 How will we learn of study results Individual research results will not be given to study participants However general results that may provide potential medical benefit will be made available to participants through our annual newsletter the NATCSS News as well as the NATCSS website 7 How often will I receive a NATCSS Newsletter You will receive the newsletter once a year 8 Why am I so important Input from every study participant is essential for the success of the study We cannot ask another participant to take your place 9 Are my responses to the questionnaire important Your responses are very important If participants do not answer the questions in the questionnaire we may not be able to obtain enough health information to make the NATCSS meaningful Answers to the questions will be kept strictly confidential and will not be used for any other purpose than our research The answers will not be shared with anyone 10 What do I receive in return for participating in the study Your contribution will benefit people now and in the future by bringing us closer to understanding the impact of thyroid cancer on survivor quality of life In the long run your participation will help enable us to develop improved disease treatment strategies and follow up interventions 12 Can participants help identify what health issues will be studied If you have suggestions please let us know by emailing us calling us or writing to us 16 Who can I contact if I have questions about
