    are the Women to reach out to medical students especially the female medical students The event was sponsored by Radiology Department and it provided an informal forum to discuss perceived gender barriers for female medical students entering the specialty of radiology Panelists include Kate Feinstein Professor of Radiology and Section Chief of Pediatric Radiology David Paushter Professor of Radiology and Chair of the Department of Radiology Alixandra Purakal second year radiology resident Deepa Sheth Assistant Professor of Radiology in the Breast Imaging Section and Carina Yang Assistant Professor of Radiology in the Neuroradiology Section Director of Pediatric Neuroradiology and Director of the Neuroradiology Fellowship From the University of Chicago Biological Science Division newsletter highlight While almost half of medical students are women they represent only 25 to 27 percent of radiology residents A pre survey of 32 female medical students attending a recent diversity luncheon at the Pritzker School of Medicine revealed their concerns about a radiology career Reasons cited included a lack of patient contact potential boredom from repetitious reading of radiological exams and being in a dark room away from other clinicians We are now actively going out to meet patients said panelist Deepa Sheth MD breast imaging

    Chicago Medicine Campus Maps Directories University Index Archived News Radiology E Mail UCMC Applications Prostate MRI Center IVC Filter Clinic The Department of Radiology at the University of Chicago Medical Center UCMC fulfills its tripartite mission of education clinical care and research through the outstanding contributions of its faculty The faculty sections are broadly separated into clinical and research sections the Department successes in all of these areas are due to the close interactions of faculty in their daily efforts Faculty are international leaders in the field recognized by their leadership roles at the University Hospital and national organizations and associations The clinical sections include sections of Abdominal Imaging Breast Imaging Nuclear Medicine Musculoskeletal Imaging Neuroradiology Pediatric Imaging Thoracic Imaging and Vascular Interventional Radiology The section chiefs and physician faculty work with Dr David Paushter Chairman and the excellent technical leadership and staff to deliver the highest quality clinical care and graduate radiology education training program All clinical faculty participate in the Department s teaching missions with Dr Chris Straus leading the medical student radiology education program and Drs Seng Ong Stephen Zangan and David Schacht directing the radiology residency program The basic research faculty participate through two broad sections

    field Residents are also offered the opportunity to attend the Radiological Pathology Course at the American Institute of Radiologic Pathology in Washington DC and are given 3 months of elective time which may be used for additional clinical rotations and or research The training program is well balanced and offers a broad variety of career pathways that include the practice of general radiology and its subspecialties Furthermore the University of Chicago s academic affiliation with NorthShore University HealthSystem allows our residents to complement their training with additional experience at one of the nation s leading community based teaching hospitals Educational facilities include a newly designed study room with six computer workstations Daily conferences take place in our recently remodeled resident conference room with projection capability allowing cases to be viewed directly from our PACS or from other electronic media Teaching conferences consist of daily noontime conferences weekly seminars and approximately 25 clinical conferences conducted by faculty each week Grand Rounds and Research Conferences are scheduled on a regular basis A required radiological physics and radiation biology course with practicum is held two hours per week in the first year Residents also attend a Review Course in Radiation Physics held in August and the University of Chicago Radiology Review Course in the spring Residents are provided with a shared office lounge adjacent locker room and on call room with access to the PACS system when on call Although our primary goal is to train outstanding clinical radiologists as a world class academic institution teaching and research are fundamental components of our program we are particularly proud of the large number of trainees who choose to continue their careers in academic medicine All trainees are encouraged to participate in research activities and dedicated time and funding is provided to motivated residents for
