  • Bonnie Bassler, Princeton University, How Bacteria Talk to Each Other
    when undertaken by an individual bacterium acting alone but become effective when undertaken in unison by the group For example quorum sensing controls virulence sporulation and the exchange of DNA Thus quorum sensing is a mechanism that allows bacteria to function as multi cellular organisms Cell to cell communication in bacteria was likely one of the first steps in the evolution of higher organisms Current biomedical research is focused on the development of novel anti bacterial therapies aimed at interfering with quorum sensing Such therapies could be used to control bacterial pathogenicity Bonnie Bassler is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences She is a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator and the Squibb Professor of Molecular Biology at Princeton University Bassler received a B S in Biochemistry from the University of California at Davis and a Ph D in Biochemistry from the Johns Hopkins University She performed postdoctoral work in Genetics at the Agouron Institute and she joined the Princeton faculty in 1994 The research in her laboratory focuses on the molecular mechanisms that bacteria use for intercellular communication called quorum sensing Dr Bassler has been awarded numerous prestigious awards including

  • Lars Bildsten, KITP, Inauguration to the Wayne Rosing, Simon and Diana Raab Chair in Theoretical Astrophysics: Exploding Stars
    landmark projects in the computing industry since the late 1970s then as director of engineering at Apple Computer in the early 1980s where he led the Apple Lisa project forerunner to the Macintosh He went on to work at Sun Microsystems headed the spin off First Person and developed Java with his team at Sun Labs Mr Rosing subsequently served as Vice President of Engineering at Google until 2005 and continues to serve as an advisor there He is a Senior Fellow in Mathematical and Physical Sciences at UC Davis and a Senior Fellow at UC Santa Barbara His passion for astronomy led to his founding Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope Network LCOGTN a private operating foundation in Goleta building a global network of robotic telescopes for scientific research and research based science education LCOGTN is affiliated with the Department of Physics at UC Santa Barbara and will be the first of its kind to make long term observations of extrasolar planets supernovae variable stars and other transients Simon Raab is Chairman and founder of Faro Technologies Inc NASDAQ FARO Chairman of Novim holds a doctorate in Mechanical Engineering from McGill University Montreal Canada a Masters of Engineering Physics from Cornell University and holds over 80 patents in medical and industrial applications FARO Technologies specialized in 3D orthopedic diagnostics and computer aided surgery products subsequently licensed to Medtronics and others Faro then transitioned into industrial measurement and is now a worldwide leader in high precision portable 3D measurement Since moving to Santa Barbara Mr Raab has returned to his early passion for art and exhibits his innovative art form called Parleau in galleries in Europe Diana M Raab is a celebrated author and leader in Santa Barbara s literary community She serves on the boards of Poets Writers and The

  • William Phillips, NIST, Time, Einstein and the Coolest Stuff in the Universe
    are the heart of the Global Positioning System GPS which guides cars airplanes and hikers to their destinations Today atomic clocks are still being improved using atoms cooled to incredibly low temperatures Atomic gases reach temperatures less than a billionth of a degree above Absolute Zero Super cold atoms are at the heart of Primary Clocks accurate to better than a second in 100 million years Such atoms also use and allow tests of some of Einstein s strangest predictions This lively multimedia presentation will include experimental demonstrations and down to earth explanations of some of today s most exciting science William D Phillips is a Fellow of the Joint Quantum Institute a cooperative research organization of the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the University of Maryland which is devoted to the study of quantum coherent phenomena At NIST he leads the Laser Cooling and Trapping Group and at JQI he is the co director of an NSF funded Physics Frontier Center studying quantum phenomena across the subfields of physics In 1997 Dr Phillips shared the Nobel Prize in Physics for development of methods to cool and trap atoms with laser light Introduction by David Gross The recording
