    only one wanting direct sales fishermen and aquafarmers are enthusiastic about keeping more of their products local and having more face time with the public Nine fishing vessels and one aquafarm participated in this first market compared to the previous single boat operation San Diego s supply is strong and diverse but modest Saturday s 5 hour long market offered 14 different types of seafood thousands of pounds of food was sold available to anyone willing to stand in line for fresh local catch However with only about 165 fishermen in San Diego our fisheries cannot sustain the population of more than three million people in San Diego s metropolitan area on their own Our local fisheries will likely remain relatively small due to virtually no new fishermen entering the field the regulatory and economic hurdles associated with entry or expansion and our healthy well managed but relatively limited coastal marine resources But making San Diego seafood a part of your diet will be good for your health and will do wonders for supporting the local economy bolstering environmental stewardship and contributing to our coastal heritage Bring back the Catch of the Week mentality Because of imports people are used to a constant supply of a few popular types of seafood and have forgotten the Catch of the Week or Catch of the Day modus operandi Local catch especially responsibly harvested catch can be quite variable due to weather season and resource regulations and ocean conditions Some species will remain fairly constant throughout the year smaller fish invertebrates and farmed products but many will have variable availability It s just how nature operates And what s available locally is different from the imports we ve been used to seeing These options are fresh responsibly sourced and exciting that includes several

  • Recovery program sets up coho salmon rebound | California Sea Grant
    the growth and survival of juvenile fish their migration as smolts to the ocean and their return to spawn as adults in the winter after about 18 months in the sea Data collected allows the program to be adaptively managed to improve the potential for success The monitoring effort involves close collaboration with more than 500 private landowners who allow scientists access to stream reaches on their private property California Sea Grant Extension Specialist Paul Olin has worked on the project for more than a decade and leads the monitoring component of the RRCSCBP Coho salmon are integral to a balanced fully functioning ecosystem They have a historical legacy in the Russian River as a major source of food for local tribes and until the mid 1900s supported important commercial and recreational fisheries said Olin The dramatic decline in coho and Chinook salmon and steelhead populations in the Russian River highlight the need to change and improve our management of coastal and marine resources or these iconic fish could be lost forever to future generations Olin and his team of field biologists led by Mariska Obedzinski use a variety of methods to monitor the fish including snorkeling electrofishing and Passive Integrated Transponder PIT tags coupled with an array of PIT tag antennas Within the last year they have installed 24 PIT tag antennas in two arrays that span the Russian River mainstem in Duncans Mills to track the movement of tagged fish and obtain estimates of the total population In summer of 2013 CASG Extension personnel documented the presence of an estimated 12 590 juvenile coho salmon the highest recorded numbers in decades Olin remains hopeful that the salmon will rebound successfully and thinks this recovery strategy can be applied to other locations I am optimistic about the long term

    do just that Street applied to the California Sea Grant State Fellows Program and spent the next year at the California Coastal Commission The program which provides a unique educational opportunity for graduate students who are interested both in marine policy and resource management was a springboard to a new career for Street and many others who have participated in the program We match highly qualified graduate students with host agencies for a year long paid fellowship said California Sea Grant Associate Director Shauna Oh The fellows acquire on the job experience in the planning and implementation of marine and coastal resource policies and programs It gives them a leg up when applying for a job and the agencies benefit from this pool of exceptional workers State fellows work closely with mentors to advance the agency s mission and supplement their training experience This year California Sea Grant announced its largest class of state fellows sixteen graduate students and recent graduates were paired with state or federal agencies in California To address complex environmental challenges and manage policies decision makers and government agencies need individuals with a wide breadth of education and experience Fellows have included recent graduates with a master s degree in public administration and law school graduates with an interest in environmental policy The fellowship can make graduates aware of opportunities outside of the academic track The fellowship helped me to re evaluate my career goals and my personal definition of success said Street Science offers our best hope of crafting effective policies to deal with environmental change and this reality requires a type of scientist who can not only generate new data but also translate synthesize and apply existing research to emerging problems To learn more about the California Sea Grant State Fellows program watch the

  • 4 reasons for the 72-hour beach advisory | California Sea Grant
    after a rain according to a recent UCLA study 2 Ultraviolet radiation Sunlight kills a lot of bacteria 3 Seawater Salt is also lethal to some microbes 4 Predation Bacteria are part of the food chain and are grazed on by free living protozoans and other microbes It s a microscopic jungle out there California Sea Grant is currently funding research that is looking to develop the next generation of water quality testing technologies including a better understanding of viral pollution which is not currently monitored at beaches Below are two of our ongoing research projects summarized with contact information for the lead investigators In situ Detection of Indicator Organisms by Digitization and Concentration in Microfluidic Picoliter Droplets R CONT 219 Feb 2013 Jan 2014 Sindy Tang SU 650 723 5385 sindy stanford edu The researcher has designed but not fully tested an intensely high tech approach for monitoring low concentrations of pathogenic bacteria in water samples In the method water samples are mixed with probes that enzymes in bacteria convert to a fluorescent colored product Picoliter trillionth of a liter droplets are formed from this mixture and the brightly colored drops are then counted to estimate bacterial concentrations The key step in the approach is the ability to form the droplets within which a single cell will have a very high effective concentration on the order of 10 9 cfu mL Besides amplifying the pathogenic signal the approach also reduces the assay time for detecting bacteria which is critical for protecting public health The main objective of this proof of concept project is to demonstrate the ability to form the droplets and count cells for the fecal indicator bacteria Escherichia coli and Enterococcus sp The method s accuracy will be verified for samples with known cell counts The scientist will also characterize the rate at which color intensity builds in incubating droplets as a function of droplet size to identify an optimal drop size and assay time for the bacteria The enzyme substrate probe technology to be employed in this project has been approved and is expected to become adopted by the EPA Outcomes from this project will further efforts to quantitatively measure low concentrations of water borne pathogens through a technique that packages the EPA method in picoliter containers Noroviruses in Coastal Waters Implications for Seafood Cultivation and Human Health R CONT 216 Feb 2012 Jan 2014 Stefan Wuertz UCD 530 754 6407 swuertz ucdavis edu Karen Shapiro UCD 530 754 6144 kshapiro ucdavis edu Woutrina Miller UCD 530 219 1369 wamiller ucdavis edu Fragments of single stranded RNA known as noroviruses are the leading cause of food borne disease outbreaks in United States according to the Centers for Disease Control Though outbreaks usually occur in small areas of high population density such as nursing homes or cruise ships the scientists leading this project have detected the virus in all types of freshwater discharges including rural runoff This project will investigate whether livestock or other animals may be
