  • California Sea Grant Fellow accepts position at California State Lands Commission | California Sea Grant
    with a background in underwater acoustics and marine mammals Keen assisted with the review and update of the State Lands Commission s Low Energy Offshore Geophysical Permit Program during her fellowship She reviewed how geophysical surveys would impact marine wildlife and is currently working to implement the Program Keen is also investigating how sea level rise will affect the Commission s jurisdiction while maintaining its mission to manage and protect the state s lands waterways and natural resources Keen s fellowship projects carried over to her job at the California agency where she has taken on additional responsibilities as a full time staff member Prior to her fellowship Keen earned her master s degree in marine biodiversity and conservation from Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego in 2012 Her advice to future Fellows Use this opportunity as a learning experience be a sponge and absorb all you can Keen said Keen is one of 13 California Sea Grant State Fellows who received a 12 month paid fellowship in 2013 The marine policy and resource management fellows have graduate level training and are placed at state and federal agencies in California About California Sea Grant NOAA s California Sea

  • California Sea Grant State Fellowship Program 2015 - Call for Host Applications | California Sea Grant
    California Sea Grant plans to select 10 15 finalists depending on size of applicant pool and number of host offerings who will be awarded fellowships Fellowship applications are submitted to California Sea Grant and screened for appropriate academic background employment history community and extracurricular activities interest in the fellowship and for personal characteristics such as initiative adaptability and strong communication and analytical skills Final host placement assignments for each class will be based on interviews and ranking of preferences by both the selected finalists and participating hosts at a mandatory matching workshop in Sacramento typically scheduled in early to mid November Consequently placement of a fellow in each prospective host office is not guaranteed Prospective hosts are expected to contribute at least 70 of the costs to support a fellow If a host is requesting more than one fellow the host will pay 100 of the costs associated with the second and or third fellowships Sea Grant will administer the monthly stipend payments health insurance and travel reimbursements for each fellow Stipend and Expense Hosts are expected to cover at least 70 33 215 of the total direct costs of their first fellowship award includes stipend health insurance reimbursement travel costs and administrative costs and 100 46 865 of the total direct costs of any additional fellowship awards UCSD s standard off campus IDC rate of 26 applies to all costs If you have any questions about the IDC please contact the Sea Grant office Once hosts are confirmed they are expected to work with Sea Grant and the Scripps Office of Contract and Grant Administration to put into place a cooperative or interagency agreement for each fellowship award prior to the start of fellowships in winter 2014 15 Direct cost of fellowship award 45 500 Sea Grant Administrative Cost 1 365 Indirect Cost Rate off campus 26 Amount of host cost of cost x direct cost of fellowship award Sea Grant cost x 1 26 Amount of host cost at 70 0 70 x 45 500 1365 x 1 26 41 851 Amount of host cost at 100 45 500 1365 x 1 26 59 050 Length of Assignment The length of the fellowship assignment is 12 months non renewable The fellowship for this year s competition will begin in the winter December 2014 to February 2015 negotiable between host and fellow Application The California Sea Grant State Fellowship program is open for support by state and federal agencies in California with mandates in coastal or marine research policy or management A host application will include the following Host location and contact information Names of fellowship supervisor s Point of contact for California Sea Grant prospective fellows and finalists Position description not to exceed two pages singled spaced If selected as a participating host this description will be made available to prospective fellowship applicants Amount of proposed financial contribution Please submit the above information to Shauna Oh at shaunaoh ucsd edu by July 28 2014 Selection Acceptance of a

    at the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary she will continue efforts to reduce the threat of ship strikes to the recovery of endangered and protected whales Update 10 14 2013 Presentation Kelly Keen California State Lands Commission Kelly Keen earned her master s degree in marine biodiversity and conservation from Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego in 2012 Her thesis explored deep water sound propagation from seismic air gun surveys in the Arctic possible consequences for bowhead whales and native subsistence communities and the effectiveness of mitigation measures put in place to reduce these possible impacts As a State Fellow at the California State Lands Commission she will be working on a variety of complex and challenging marine and coastal issues concerning offshore geophysical and seismic surveys marine renewable energy technologies and marine debris Update 10 14 2013 Presentation Anniken Lydon San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission Anniken Lydon earned a master s degree from Cal Poly State University in San Luis Obispo for her studies of Arctic kelp populations around the Svalbard Archipelago in the Arctic Ocean As a State Fellow she will help develop the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission s Regional Sediment Management program I will be identifying sediment hot spots within the bay and system wide sediment dynamics that will help flood control and watershed managers evaluate impacts of individual projects to the entire system Lydon explained I am very excited to join the sediment management team Update 10 14 2013 Presentation Katie Morrice Delta Science Program Katie Morrice earned a master s degree in marine science from Moss Landing Marine Laboratories in 2011 for her research on flows boundary layer dynamics and mixing in the Monterey Submarine Canyon Last year she was a NOAA Fisheries groundfish observer on several commercial fishing vessels in the Bering Sea At the Delta Science Program s Independent Science Board I will be assisting with programs related to ecosystem restoration and water supply reliability and addressing how climate change and adaptive management can be incorporated into these programs she explained Update 10 14 2013 Presentation Emily Mortazavi Delta Science Program Emily Mortazavi earned a master s degree in earth sciences with an emphasis on marine sedimentology and paleomagnetism from USC in 2012 Her thesis explored Holocene sedimentation patterns in the western equatorial Pacific Ocean and its implications for understanding past climatic patterns She started her fellowship in mid January and has not yet formulated a specific plan for her fellowship year Broadly though she will be working at the Delta Science Program on advancing its science plan and incorporating its science into the greater Delta Plan to achieve the coequal goals of providing a more reliable water supply for California and protecting restoring and enhancing the Delta ecosystem Update 10 14 2013 Presentation Ariadne Reynolds California State Coastal Conservancy Ariadne Reynolds earned a master s degree in coastal marine resource management from the Bren School of Environmental Science and Management at UC Santa Barbara in
