  • Predator Versus Prey | California Sea Grant
    lead author Scott Hamilton previously a postdoctoral researcher at UCSB and now a faculty member at Moss Landing Marine Laboratories near Monterey show that as sheephead increase in size particularly when they surpass the minimum size limit of the fishery they are able to eat bigger urchins and more of them as revealed by analysis of their gut content That s probably because large sheephead can physically handle the urchins Caselle said We call it gape size meaning their mouth is big enough to get around them The researchers began their work in 2007 by investigating sheephead population dynamics and life histories in response to fishing pressure They also have done studies on species movements and whether marine protected areas could help sheephead recover from overfishing The current paper combines previous findings with new work using visual surveys and path analysis to quantify the direct and indirect effects of sheephead on sea urchins and macroalgal assemblages The research illustrates the context dependent ecological role of sheephead in Southern California kelp forests When predators such as sheephead are fished not only does abundance diminish Caselle noted but size structure is also reduced because fisheries usually target bigger individuals The main point of our work is not necessarily about fishing reducing abundance it s about how fishing reduces size structure she said If you have a species whose predation rate depends on that size you can have strong trophic effects without even thinking about abundance changes The way in which fishing alters size structured food web interactions has implications for the structure and function of kelp forest ecosystems Our argument emphasizes that management strategies protecting large sheephead such as marine reserves or increases in the minimum size limit may help alleviate overgrazing in temperate kelp forest systems Caselle concluded The reduction in

    the rising and lowering of the tides Another marsh creature relies on the same cordgrass Haliaspis spartinae otherwise known as scale insects These pinhead sized animals form white protective armor that allows them to live and feed for their entire lives on a single blade of cordgrass Funded by a grant from California Sea Grant Long set out to discover exactly how these scale insects affect the growth of cordgrass Concentrating on cordgrass For his study Long and Laura Porturas then an undergraduate research assistant at SDSU conducted three experiments on the marsh First they visited the marsh once a week and used toothbrushes to remove scale insects from cordgrass in a particular cropping They let the scale insects go about their usual business on another set of plants After 20 weeks they compared the normally infested plants with the brushed off ones We saw major negative effects from the scale insects Long said Plants with scale insects were shorter weighed less and died off earlier in the season than did the brushed off cordgrass This makes sense Long said as scale insects sap the cordgrass of sugars and nutrients But he was curious whether another factor might also be at play soil salinity Saltiness is a constantly churning variable in a salt marsh and plants like cordgrass have to expend energy filtering and excreting the salt So he performed a second experiment in the lab growing the cordgrass with and without scale insects in either fresh water or seawater To his surprise the freshwater cordgrass actually grew taller when it was infested with scale insects than when it wasn t Long was initially puzzled Why did these insects appear to help the cordgrass grow in fresh water but not in salt water Then he had an idea Compensating for consumption There s an idea in plant biology called the compensatory continuum hypothesis whereby plants can compensate for grazing by growing more but this ability changes with environmental stress Long said As for why the cordgrass seemed to overcompensate in fresh water but not in seawater Long thought that perhaps the effort required to filter the seawater was just too much for the cordgrass stressing it too much to overcompensate In the absence of this stress overcompensation kicked in We hypothesized that when these plants aren t stressed they can compensate for their grazing by scale insects by growing more Long said To test this Long conducted a third experiment Back in the salt marsh he raised the salinity of select locations of cordgrass by adding locally sourced salt then repeated his toothbrush experiment in these locations brushing off the insects from some plants but not from others He found that once the salinity got high enough it negated the positive effects of removing the scale insects In other words once the water gets too salty it doesn t matter whether there s an insect infestation or not the plant grows the same either way Salt of the earth Putting

  • Nice catch: Fishermen recover lost crabbing gear | California Sea Grant
    that can roll and tumble pots along the seabed The pots long buoy lines also can pose an entanglement hazard to newly set crab and salmon gear thus causing a cycle of gear loss adding up to significant costs for fishermen each year By removing the lost gear the project improves relationships with other fisheries Researchers Kirsten Gilardi and Jennifer Renzullo of the UC Davis Wildlife Health Center are working to recover the lost crab gear in close partnership with the Humboldt Fishermen s Marketing Association HFMA in Eureka and the California Lost Fishing Gear Recovery Project With the support of a Collaborative Fisheries Research West CFRW grant the researchers recruited for and developed a community based fishermen led gear removal program The CFRW grant allowed us to do all the outreach attend association meetings walk the docks and get to know the fisherman so we could garner trust and support Renzullo said In the end the goal is to to identify funds within the fishery to make this an independent program The researchers explored a variety of strategies to achieve a self sustaining financial model for future cleanups Currently pots are traced to their owners and sold back for 50 75 or recycled The proceeds are collected to fund the recovery program More than 600 lost crab pots have been collected since the project s beginning California Sea Grant supports this research through our partnership with the non profit Collaborative Fisheries Research West funded by the OPC About California Sea Grant NOAA s California Sea Grant College Program funds marine research education and outreach throughout California Our headquarters is at Scripps Institution of Oceanography University of California San Diego we are one of 33 Sea Grant programs in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration NOAA U S Department of

  • Findings from San Diego Dockside Fishing Markets Feasibility Study to be Presented | California Sea Grant
