of biomimetic synthesis techniques which seek to understand and harness biologically guided production of materials including nanomaterials with novel biomedically important properties Engineering design development and control of new micro and nanoscale materials for delivery of genes drugs and cells to tissue targets Directing immune cell function through engineered cell material interfaces artificial lymph nodes and targeted controlled release of biologics Novel scaffold design including magnetically actuated 3D scaffold self assembly and structuring of 3D cell micro rod tissue structures and biomimetic scaffold materials and design Cellular Biomechanics and Cell Control An area that overlaps with many aspects of research within ICTSE is understanding and modelling the way cells respond to mechanical cues and using this information to control and influence cell behaviour Part of this research focuses on developing and understanding of the molecular pathways that are activated during deformation of the cell s cytoskeleton how that activation results in specific cellular functions such as protein production and how to control these processes Investigators in ICTSE are pursuing these goals through a variety of techniques such as targeted cellular nanomagnetic actuation application of forces to cells and tissue constructs via mechano active scaffolds and fluid shear and using micro and nanopatterned surfaces to influence and elicit mechanical responses in cells Stem Cell Targeting and Engineering for Regenerative Medicine A major focus of ICTSE members is on understanding targeting and controlling stem cells and growing replacement tissue outside the body tissue engineering or at targeted sites within the body regenerative medicine Investigators in the institute are actively pioneering novel technologies in these areas Molecular control of stem cell neurogenesis Nanomagnetic actuation to remotely control stem cell differentiation through targeting and actuating specific cell surface receptors and delivery and control of growth factors Investigating novel techniques for using decellularized tissue matrix
