    Giving Giving Current Endowments Interviews with Notable Alumni Giving Make a Gift Online The ExxonMobil Gator Alumni Faculty Endowment The ExxonMobil Gator Alumni STEPUP Fund Annual Giving Dean s Leadership Circle Members Current Endowments Powering the New Engineer to Transform the Future Events Contact Us Update Your Contact Information Current Endowments Endowed gifts are made possible by the extreme generosity of our alumni and friends we want to say thank you and acknowledge those who have contributed to our past and present success As permanent funds endowments are critical to the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering because they generate predictable and continuous streams of income in perpetuity The college is committed to growing these endowments as a way to ensure that engineers will be taught leadership innovation entrepreneurship skills and much more for generations to come Gator Engineering has current funding opportunities within the following categories Scholarships Fellowships Review our current list of scholarships fellowships within the College Undergraduate scholarships and graduate fellowships are forms of aid that help students pay for their educations Unlike loans they do not have to be repaid Generally scholarships and fellowships are reserved for students with special qualifications such as academic athletic or artistic talent Awards are also available for students who are interested in particular fields of study who live in certain areas of the country or who demonstrate financial need Professorships Chairs Scan the list of current professorships chairs within Gator Engineering Exemplified by world class scholarship and instruction endowed professorships and chairs are among the most significant awards conferred to faculty Income from these funds provides salary research support and resources for program development that enable educators to pursue projects at the forefront of their fields Because they foster exceptional opportunities for teaching and research endowed positions are fundamental to the

    Calendar C200 Leadership Summit Submit an Event Gator Engineering Newsletter Receive Gator Engineering Email Updates Media Information Gator Engineering Videos Alumni Giving Interviews with Notable Alumni Giving Make a Gift Online Annual Giving Current Endowments Powering the New Engineer to Transform the Future Events Contact Us Update Your Contact Information Remembering Larry Hench 1938 2015 Published January 13th 2016 Category Featured News Professor Emeritus Larry L Hench passed away on Dec 16 2015 at his home in Ft Meyers FL He was 77 Dr Hench taught materials science engineering at UF for 32 years During that time he invented Bioglass the first man made material to bond with living tissues Bioglass is a unique range of soda calcia phosphate silica glasses Hench s concept behind it of bioactive bonding pioneered the field of biomedical materials and revolutionized a new approach to repair and regeneration in the body Bioglass and its derivatives are still used extensively around the world in the repair of bones joints and teeth Larry was a pivotal and important figure in our department for many years and with everything he did was a true renaissance man said James Baciak professor and chair of UF s department of materials science and engineering noting that in addition to his work with Bioglass Hench s research was pivotal in solving problems related to nuclear waste storage He will be greatly missed Hench and his contributions to materials research were recently featured on the Discovery UK series Future Now Scientific Breakthroughs Shaping Our Lives The episode Repairing the Human Body describes how Hench who at the time was making nonreactive ceramic materials for space missions met a Vietnam War surgeon who was eager to find a bone graft material that the human body would not reject It was 1969 and Bioglass soon made history After retiring from UF Hench joined Imperial College London as chair of their Ceramic Materials Department At Imperial he co founded and co directed the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine Centre for 10 years He also authored a series of children s books featuring Boing Boing the Bionic Cat and created educational materials such as workbooks experiment books and hands on kits to stimulate interest in science engineering technology and mathematics STEM A celebration of Dr Hench s life will be held at the Florida Museum of Natural History on February 12 2016 from 5 30 8 30 pm All are welcome Read more about Dr Hench and his accomplishments in his obituary Tweet Mining water Purification Now Possible in Hours Not Decades Dr Warren Dixon Named IEEE Fellow Recent News Announcing the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering Jan 26th 2016 Tornado preparedness Lessons from the aftermath Jan 26th 2016 Florida Governor recognizes UF Engineering alumnus with Young Entrepreneurship Award Jan 22nd 2016 Defending your computer from cyber attacks Sun Tzu style Jan 21st 2016 News Archive News Archive Select Month January 2016 December 2015 November 2015 October 2015 September 2015 August 2015 July 2015 June 2015
