  • Freshmen Engineering Summer Bridge Programs » Undergraduate Student Affairs » University of Florida
    of Student Transition and Retention STAR offers a series of freshman transition summer bridge programs that range in intensity based on the curriculum of each program The Successful Transition through Enhanced Preparation for Undergraduates Program STEPUP and the Engineering Freshmen Transition Program EFTP combine to provide first year engineering students with four distinct options to assist them in successfully transitioning into the University To begin the process of developing themselves into competitive applicants entering industry or graduate school first year engineering students must not only develop a conceptual mastery of foundation courses attained from high school BC AP IB etc they must also develop strong analytical skills that enable them to apply this knowledge to real world problem solving situations and real world application scenarios In short the ultimate goal of each each tier of the summer bridge program is to assist freshmen engineering students in better preparing themselves for the intensity of the UF engineering curriculum developing strong leadership skills and gaining practical experience through internships research and study abroad opportunities Summer Bridge Program Structure STAR summer bridge programs are structured as either residential and or non residential programs The residential program component takes place during the summer B term of each academic year The non residential program component takes place during the Fall and Spring semester of each academic year Residential Summer Bridge Program First year students desiring to participate in a residential program may choose between three separate program tiers or tracks The primary difference between each track is based on the program course load and the inclusion of professional development activities outside of the classroom All three tracks of the residential component program include a non residential component that takes place during the fall and spring term The primary objective for each of these programs is to support first year students in Becoming acclimated to the College University prior to the start of the Fall semester Assessing their ability to adjust to the intensity level speed and style of college instruction at UF Gaining experience working in teams as part of the project design experience This includes the use of diverse engineering related software and participation in a project design competition Supporting student long term success within the major by assisting them in establishing strong peer cohorts with fellow engineering students The residential component of the summer bridge program takes place during the 6 week Summer B term and includes three different tracks options The primary difference between each track option is based on the program s course load and the level of professional development activities outside of the classroom Tracks included as part of the residential summer program component include Track I Entering Freshman Transition Program EFTP This program track option is designed for students interested in enhancing their knowledge and skills sets related gaining an understanding of the engineering problem solving process and the application of these concepts through project design using engineering related software This track allows participants to enroll in 1 2
