    involved in Here are the links to each department s research areas Agriculture and Biological Engineering Biomedical Engineering Chemical Engineering Computer Information Science Engineering Electrical and Computer Engineering Engineering School of Sustainable Infrastructure Environment for Civil Coastal Engineering and Environmental Engineering Sciences Industrial and Systems Engineering Materials Science and Engineering Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Nuclear Engineering Step 2 Identify a few faculty members who are doing research in the area that you are interested in Read up on their area of research Read a few of their publications to find out more about what their research is about Google Scholar link https scholar google com Step 3 Prepare a resume It s ok if your resume does not list any research experience Include classes that you have taken or are currently taking that is related to the field of research you are interested in Include any lab experience or technical projects Include any computer programming skills that you may have Your resume should show that you pay attention to details no typos or misspellings and that you are a mature individual who would excel in a lab environment even if you may be lacking in experience Prepare a cover letter Your cover letter should include a short background about yourself your interest and passion in the field as well as what you hope to accomplish from a research experience It should also include details that would show the faculty member that you have read up on what his her work is about and how it relates to your interest Be brief but concise Faculty members are busy individuals and do not want to read a rambling letter Be courteous thoughtful and brief Step 4 Email your resume and cover letter to the faculty member s Make sure that your resume and cover letter are in PDF format and are free from grammatical spelling formatting errors You only have one chance to make a first impression Include in your email the reason you are writing to him her Do not forget to include your attachments In your email ask the faculty member if he she will be available to meet with you to discuss in person a research opportunity Step 5a If faculty member declines due to your lack of experience or coursework ask for advice on what classes to take in order to improve your chances in the next semester Step 5b If you are able to arrange an in person meeting with the faculty member DO NOT BE LATE Bring a hardcopy of your resume in person Wear clean clothes You do not have to wear a suit But you will not make a good impression if you show up in flip flops tattered T shirt and board shorts Be presentable During the meeting ask thoughtful questions explain why you are interested in research and in particular why you are interested in his her research Explain what you intend to commit to if given a research position in terms
