    culture of innovation among our faculty students and staff which serves to expand the pipeline of commercializable technologies Additionally the Institute works with OTL to engage external stakeholders such as investors and entrepreneurs The UF Foundation and Alumni Network includes a broad and diverse alumni base many of whom have been successful entrepreneurs and innovators and are looking for a means to leave a legacy through UF s students faculty and research programs The Institute serves as a conduit to provide the UF alumni to change the world in multiple meaningful ways though guidance and financial support or the Institute s programs The UF Creative Campus Initiative establishes educational settings that infuse the academy with the arts foster creativity in all disciplines promote interdisciplinary projects and encourage new ways of solving problems and expressing ideas Community Resources Innovation Gainesville iG is a partnership among the public and private sector to build Gainesville as an international innovation hub over the next decade Gainesville has been consistently cited in national surveys for its innovation capacity For instance Gainesville is projected to have the highest percentage growth of creative class jobs in the nation over the next decade by noted economist Richard Florida The institute leverages iG to connect our students and faculty with the local and state wide entrepreneurial network The Gainesville Area Innovation Network GAIN mission is to encourage technology enterprises to start up and develop in the Gainesville area by providing them with support through networking and educational opportunities GAIN includes a vibrant social networking site for Gainesville s innovation community Gainesville is home to more technology business incubators per capita than any other U S city including the UF Innovation Hub the Sid Martin Biotechnology Development Incubator BDI the Gainesville Technology Enterprise Center GTEC the Downtown Technology Center DTC

    of Florida The Institute participates in the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering Introduction to Engineering EGN1002 course taken by most UF freshman who have declared engineering as their major field of study Introduction to Engineering is a 1 credit hour elective designed to introduce students to the engineering majors at UF The course meets weekly and the Institute provides a weekly lecture highlighting leadership in innovation Integrated Product and Process Design The Integrated Product and Process Design program is an innovative educational initiative at the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering University of Florida Our students work in small multidisciplinary teams under the guidance of faculty coaches and industrial liaison engineers to design and build authentic industrial products for sponsoring companies Integrated Technology Ventures This two semester experiential education offering involves the formation of virtual start up companies to develop engineering prototypes and business collateral market studies business plans investor presentations etc to advance UF COE technologies to commercialization and provide students with a real world engineering entrepreneurship education The program brings together undergraduate engineer MBA and law students under the direction of a virtual start up company management team an externally recruited serial entrepreneur who serves as the company CEO and faculty coaches who serve as the company management The program has been active since 2003 and typically involves 2 3 virtual companies per year Engineering Innovation Certificate and Courses The COE has expanded its engineering innovation curricular offerings to include an entrepreneurship certificate program for undergraduate and graduate engineers across all disciplines The elements of the Entrepreneurship Certificate are designed to provide students with a strong foundation in engineering leadership engineering innovation and engineering entrepreneurship Engineering Innovation Internship In collaboration with Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering alumni students will be given an opportunity to participate in an internship experience

    increase faculty conversation and competency in entrepreneurship and innovation Specifically the Faculty Innovation Council is established to discuss UF state and national rules regulations and processes relevant to faculty and students who wish to pursue entrepreneurial endeavors and how to optimize the process Bring entrepreneurial faculty thought leaders together to discuss key issues Discuss how to properly evaluate and reward entrepreneurial activity in the course of faculty advancement Provide peer mentoring and guidance to get faculty to think and act entrepreneurially Act as a sounding board for new innovation initiatives and Lead seminars and provide one on one guidance to other faculty in innovation topics Funding Opportunities The Engineering Innovation Institute monitors new programs in the private government or academic sectors focused on innovation commercializaton and early stage translational research funding These programs can provide faculty with funding support to start to transition the Valley of Death between early stage research and commercialization The Institute also provides assistance to faculty in proposal preparation and maintains contacts in the entrepreneurial and investment communities that can partner on proposals Innovation Library The Institute has designed its curricular offerings in a modular fashion such that individual elements can be offered to College faculty for seamless integration into their core curriculum Many core engineering courses are requiring that students work in innovative team environments and the Institute has established an Innovation Library of resources lecture materials experts case studies etc that can be delivered by outside experts or the faculty themselves Entrepreneur in Residence The Institute has developed a program to bring successful engineering entrepreneurs to campus to work with our faculty and students on an extended and in depth basis The Entrepreneur in Residence interfaces regularly with undergraduate and graduate students and faculty in guiding the development of student and faculty generated market

    50 000 per award with a 6 month duration of each award The NSF Partnerships for Innovation Accelerating Innovation Research NSF PFI AIR program consists of two programmatic paths The first Technology Translation encourages the translation of technologically promising research discoveries made by prior and or current NSF funded investigators toward a path of commercialization while the second path Research Alliance promotes synergistic collaborations between an existing NSF funded research alliance including consortia such as Engineering Research Centers Industry University Cooperative Research Centers Science and Technology Centers Nanoscale Science and Engineering Centers Materials Research Science and Engineering Centers Centers for Chemical Innovation and Emerging Frontiers in Research and Innovation grantees and other public and private entities to motivate the translation and transfer of research discoveries into innovative technologies and commercial reality Both of these choices are designed to accelerate innovation that results in the creation of new wealth and the building of strong local regional and national economies The Florida High Tech Corridor Matching Grants Research Program was established by the Florida Legislature to attract retain and grow high tech industry and to help develop the workforce to support those industries in Central Florida The program s primary focus is to foster applied university research leading to technology commercialization between the universities and central Florida high tech industry through a matching grants R D program The program provides funding of up to 150k per project to match industry sponsored research at UF Note that funding has not been provided by the Florida Legislature to support this program at UF for the current fiscal year but UF continues to pursue funding for future projects Florida IDEA grants program is a catalyst for technological breakthroughs developed in Central Florida that have a significant potential to successfully transition into commercially viable high growth
