    The Plant Biology faculty staff and students publish in top journals are well funded by extramural grants present their research in seminars and conferences all over the world and serve on a variety of grant review panels and editorial boards Many faculty have been honored with international national and University of Georgia awards The tradition of excellence has provided the foundation for a remarkable number of our graduate and postdoctoral students to advance to productive careers in academics and industry From molecules to ecosystems we embrace the entire spectrum of plant biology Strength in plant biology spans the entire campus Research collaborations include those with faculty and students in the UGA Department of Genetics Department of Crop and Soil Sciences and the Institute of Ecology Also our cellular and molecular faculty and students participate in seminars symposia and retreat meetings sponsored by The Plant Center Several faculty specialize in teaching and provide guidance on developing excellence in education skills We are committed to the career development of our students We focus on research training but we also take teaching and communication skills seriously Our students benefit from courses in teaching methods grant writing and popular science writing Our students may choose an intensive teaching internship and we include teaching based classes and seminars in our graduate curricula Our graduate students are involved Through the Plant Biology Graduate Student Association our students participate in the administration of the Department Student elected representatives attend faculty meetings and have a vote on most matters considered by the faculty including new faculty hires The faculty sends a representative to the meetings of the Graduate Student Association for the purpose of fostering communication between the graduate students and the faculty Our graduate students ranked us in the top quartile for student satisfaction in the National

    the latest technologies and equipment for your research The Plant Biology Department maintains several special purpose facilities in addition to our greenhouses to help researchers get their work done Plant Biology at Georgia has a tradition of aggressively pursuing and setting up the latest technological advances and equipment needed to do current research Members of Plant Biology also use other campus wide facilities such as the Molecular Genetics Facility the Electron and Confocal Microscope Facility and the Biological Sciences Computational Resource The UGA Research Services Division provides a number of other useful services including electronics and instrument shops Computers The Plant Biology Department maintains over 200 networked Windows based nix based and Apple computers and servers In addition to department level services such as email and web servers each lab within the department often uses specialized desktops servers and other equipment to perform tasks specific to that individual lab We also maintain a general computer lab for use by graduate students and faculty Plant Biology takes pride in pushing the limits of technology to ensure the highest level of teaching learning and research for our faculty and students Microscopy and Photography Within the Plant Biology Department we have an Electron Microscopy EM facility The EM lab is home to a Zeiss 902A Transmission Electron Microscope ultramicrotomes and a Balzers High Pressure Freezing Machine Equipment and supplies are available for both light and electron microscopy specimen preparation Several digital cameras are available for research purposes The facility is staffed by Beth Richardson Laser Capture Microdissection The P A L M Microlaser system is designed for the precise selection and collection of specific cell types living or fixed cells from all kinds of samples It is considered state of the art in the field of microdissection and uses laser pressure catapulting for

    vascular plants from around the world Emphasis is on plants from the Southeast particularly those from Georgia The GA Herbarium is a facility within the Plant Biology Dept and is also associated with the Georgia Museum of Natural History Uses of the collection The operations of the herbarium are local national and international in scope Graduate and undergraduate students with interests ranging from the agricultural sciences to zoology use herbarium material to identify plants and determine plant locations Tours are conducted for numerous school groups clubs and other organizations In addition students volunteer or enroll in internships and independent studies to work directly with herbarium staff Every year the herbarium staff provides over 1 000 plant identification and information requests from private individuals through state extension and other governmental agencies Researchers at UGA and neighboring institutions also extensively utilize the collection Besides loans to and from qualified institutions the GA Herbarium is host to scores of visiting scientists each year who visit to examine specimens and consult with the staff Collection development and maintenance The Curator a faculty member in the Plant Biology Dept and the Curatorial Assistant are responsible for the collection Graduate and undergraduate students assist with some curatorial duties as independent study internship or volunteer projects The collection is stored in metal storage units in an electronic compactorized system Computerization of records is currently underway The collection grows steadily through local field work and donated material Students at UGA especially those involved with floristic work deposit their voucher sets for their projects at the Herbarium In addition the Herbarium participates in an exchange program with other herbaria worldwide to obtain several thousand specimens per year Herbarium staff are working on a Georgia Plant Atlas and are involved with the Generic Flora of the Southeastern United States centered

    theatre and ballet events The superior acoustics of these facilities are conspicuous not only when experienced in person but also are certified by recordings of concerts that are very frequently highlighted by National Public Radio s Performance Today broadcasts Besides major performances on weekends there are free concerts and recitals nearly every weekday evening by School of Music faculty students and guests The Georgia Museum of Art on South campus has an extensive permanent collection and always changing special exhibitions lectures and films The Tate Student Center s theatre presents nightly showings of classical and contemporary movies for the admission price of only 1 for students This student union complex also is where many special lectures and small performances are presented CNN the NY Times and GO the in flight magazine of AirTran Airlines listed Athens as number two in its list of the 20 Best Long Weekends destinations out ranked only by Point Reyes National Seashore near San Francisco Sea Island a few hours away near Savannah followed as the number three choice ahead of California s Big Sur Flagpole magazine provides a weekly listing of the Athens music festival and club events Contrasting with the Georgia coast and its numerous sea islands such as Cumberland Sapelo Sea Island Jekyll and the Okefenokee Swamp in south Georgia are the Appalachian Mountains Northern Georgia includes the origin of the Appalachian Trail and many pristine state parks and national forests that are accessible in less than two hours as are rapid rivers for rafting and kayaking and large Lakes Lanier Hartwell and Russell for boating windsurfing and swimming There are also many opportunities to enjoy and explore nature closer to home In addition to our Jaworski Amphitheatre garden immediately next to the Plant Sciences Building the serene Founders Memorial Garden on North Campus which is a memorial to the first garden club in America organized in 1891 the North Oconee River Greenway and Heritage Trail a 13 mile walking and biking path that meanders through Athens The State Botanical Garden of Georgia is a magnificent mixture of formal gardens and long hiking trails through virgin forest and along streams and the Oconee River Daily exercise is afforded by the Ramsey Student Center within walking distance of the Plant Sciences Building This huge 8 acre recreational sports complex was designated as the best in the nation by Sports Illustrated The venue of UGA s Performing Arts Center includes the Hugh Hodgson Concert Hall and smaller Ramsey Concert Hall These acclaimed facilities offer superb performances throughout the year by internationally reknowned classical and contemporary music soloists chamber music ensembles orchestra and choral groups as well as theatre and ballet events The superior acoustics of these facilities are conspicuous not only when experienced in person but also are certified by recordings of concerts that are very frequently highlighted by National Public Radio s Performance Today broadcasts Besides major performances on weekends there are free concerts and recitals nearly every weekday evening by School of
