    January 21 2010 Contact Roger Nielsen nielsen uga edu 706 542 2524 Goals are set a program is designed and training is implemented Did it make a difference That is what state officials wanted to learn when they enlisted the Institute of Government to study the impact of a new training program that had recently been completed by employees in 12 state agencies The Office of Customer Service was established by executive order in January 2006 as part of Governor Sonny Perdue s stated goal to have the best customer service of any state in the nation To that end the office rolled out an extensive customer service training initiative that could eventually involve every state employee In the summer of 2009 Institute of Government Survey Research and Evaluation Unit experts began an analysis that would provide officials with an objective data driven summary of the training program s impact and an assessment of its perceived value for those who had completed it explains Rich Clark unit director First phone interviews were conducted with a select group of executives and managers and a random sample of staff from each of the agencies where more than 90 percent of the employees

    on geography via a form or an interactive map The site also serves as the primary means of publishing legislative district proposals for the public Read more Georgia Department of Corrections Facilities GIS This Web mapping system allows the Georgia Department of Corrections to analyze report and update their facilities using a geographic interface They can also generate custom reports by buffering a selected map feature road community facility etc or by employing a user defined query Georgia Department of Transportation DLG F RC File Reconciliation Georgia DOT is responsible for maintaining a description of the roads in the state Historically this has been done in a textual format known as the Road Characteristics file ITOS has partnered with GDOT to improve collection and maintenance strategies for the RC File and also to better enable its use in mapping and GIS projects by tying it in with the DLG F roads dataset that was developed at ITOS Much of the road centerline data that has been created by ITOS can be downloaded from the Georgia GIS Data Clearinghouse Georgia Department of Transportation State Map Update Until recently the Georgia Department of Transportation managed its thousands of miles of road network by using a database and four filing cabinets of hand drawn city county and state paper maps These maps became quickly outdated and had to be redrawn continually to incorporate changes in the road base Through Georgia DOT s initiative and funding ITOS completed work in 1997 on a new statewide transportation database With ITOS assistance GDOT used this new database to develop updated city county and state highway maps The official 1998 99 State of Georgia Highway Map distributed to Visitor Centers across the state in April of 1998 was the first of its kind to be developed by all digital sources by a state department of transportation ITOS provides ongoing updates to this database Georgia Forestry Commission Fire Locator Maps ITOS updated Georgia Forestry Commission maps by converting them to a digital database and integrating forestry roads contours and helicopter landing sites to create a customized series of fire locator map books and dispatch wall maps Previously the Forestry Commission located fires and directed response teams with Georgia DOT maps which did not include small unpaved service roads or other forestry specific information Forestry Commission pilots not only pinpointed fires but also directed ground teams to fires by sight an inefficient process referred to as dead reckoning by Alan Dozier Associate Chief of Forest Protection With the digital updated maps flight crews can now relay a fire s GPS location to ground teams and leave the scene ITOS is presently working on updates to these maps as well as creating new more accurate map books for both ground crews as well as flight crews to use Georgia GIS Data Clearinghouse The Georgia GIS Data Clearinghouse is a one stop location for geographic information about Georgia and surrounding states Read more Georgia Tobacco Blue Mold Reporter The Tobacco Blue

    Contact Roger Nielsen nielsen uga edu 706 542 2524 Four talented University of Georgia undergraduate students have begun working at the Institute of Government as part of the Institute of Government Fellows Program This semester long internship allows students to contribute to the Institute s assistance and training work for governments throughout the state The program also gives the Fellows the opportunity to explore the possibility of future careers in public service Each semester the Institute selects a cohort of Fellows from applicants on a competitive basis The fall 2012 cohort includes Jack Dishner Seth Taylor Matt Tyler and Jacqueline van de Velde Jack Dishner is an international affairs major from Bedford Corners New York He will work with Betty Hudson from the Institute s local government services unit Seth Taylor of Powder Springs is pursuing a double major in history and political science and has been paired with Anna Boling from the Institute s training division Matt Tyler will contribute to the Institute s Environmental Policy Program alongside his faculty mentor Rob McDowell Tyler is jointly pursuing bachelor s and master s degrees in political science and is from Atlanta Jacqueline van de Velde of St Simon s Island
