    improved methods for the restoration and utilization of the earth s renewable natural resources Investigations are conducted in five primary areas Fisheries and aquaculture forestry natural resources recreation and tourism water and soil resources and wildlife Structure Like the natural ecosystems we steward the School s research programs are fully integrated with the teaching and outreach elements of the School s mission such that each supports the others and we are able to make the most efficient use of our funding The majority of the Warnell s 69 tenure track and non tenure track faculty have appointments that include research and teaching or teaching and outreach All faculty regardless of their appointment are expected to actively support all three elements of the School s mission Overall Warnell currently has 25 71 EFTs assigned to research Teaching and research laboratories are located in a complex of four buildings on the south campus of the University of Georgia Research is also conducted at facilities located at nearby Whitehall Forest including experimental fish ponds white tailed deer pens and wildlife laboratory fisheries laboratories forest tree nursery modern greenhouses a wood utilization and plant sciences building and the Pete Phillips Laboratory for Nutrient Cycling Science In addition Warnell manages more than 24 000 acres of forest land located throughout the state The different properties represent many of the unique habitats found in Georgia and support Warnell s programs in research as well as teaching and outreach Function Warnell researchers work cooperatively with private corporations and foundations as well as public agencies federal state and local and other universities to maximize the scientific and practical value of their work Faculty members involve their graduate and undergraduate students in their research ensuring that their research efforts have an important educational component while providing a trained workforce

    Public Service and Outreach Mission The Daniel B Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources public service and outreach program is designed to place the latest ideas and technology in forestry and natural resources management into real world application by the residents of Georgia to enhance the use and value of Georgia s vital renewable natural resources Structure Like the natural ecosystems we steward Warnell s outreach programs are fully integrated with the teaching and research elements of the school s mission such that each supports the others to make the most efficient use of resources The majority of Warnell s 64 faculty have joint appointments with research and teaching or teaching and outreach and all faculty regardless of their appointment are expected to actively support all three elements of the School s mission We have 6 95 EFT assigned to public service and outreach The public service and outreach program is supported by programming at the Mary Kahrs Warnell Forest Education Center located within the 3 200 acre Dorothy Warnell Research Education and Demonstration Forest The Thompson Mills Forest and State Arboretum located on 318 acres in the Piedmont of North Georgia the Center for Invasive Species and Ecosystem Health a primarily web based education technical assistance program and the Cohutta Fisheries Center a 65 acre research and extension facility with 19 acres of ponds and two raceways used for fisheries research and outreach located in Northwest Georgia In addition the School manages more than 24 000 acres of forestland located throughout the state The different properties represent many of the unique habitats found in Georgia and support Warnell s programs in outreach as well as teaching and research Function Warnell faculty work cooperatively with private corporations and foundations as well as public agencies federal state and local and
