    in the financial sector will drag the rest of the economy into a full blown recession Giertz said Unfortunately unpleasant financial surprises may still be ahead he said Many analysts argue that recoveries from slowdowns and recessions caused by financial uncertainty last longer than more normal downturns Two of the three components of the index individual income tax and sales tax receipts were down in real terms from the same month last year Corporate tax receipts were up The Flash Index is a weighted average of Illinois growth rates in corporate earnings consumer spending and personal income Tax receipts from corporate income personal income and retail sales are adjusted for inflation before growth rates are calculated The growth rate for each component is then calculated for the 12 month period using data through Aug 31 2008 U of I Flash Index drops 1 2 points in September reaches lowest level since 2004 Flash Index Background Flash Index Archive URBANA Despite the turmoil on Wall Street through the month of September the economy in Illinois continues to grow at a slow pace according to the University of Illinois Flash Index The index which is the first barometer of the state s economy each month dropped to 101 1 in September That s down significantly from the August reading of 102 3 but remains above the index reading of 100 that marks the division between growth and retraction in the economy This might even be considered moderately good news given the turmoil in the national economy said economist J Fred Giertz who compiles the index each month for the university s Institute of Government and Public Affairs However the Illinois economy is feeling the effects of the mortgage crisis and resulting credit crunch nationally A collapse of the credit system would have
