    biofuels livestock production of agricultural fertilizers and chemicals manufacturing of farm machinery food processing and irrigation However economic growth has put additional stress on Iowa s groundwater resources Declines in groundwater levels have increased and accelerated in parts of Iowa as municipal water supplies compete with new or expanding industries for water The expansion and concentration of Iowa s livestock industry and the increased dependency of large livestock producers on rural water systems have created additional stress on shallow groundwater resources A Groundwater Sustainability IGS researchers have developed groundwater flow models have been developed for four of Iowa s regional confined aquifers bedrock model areas Numerical methods can predict future impacts and overall water level declines caused by increases in water use Proper management of Iowa s deep confined aquifers is essential to balance current economic development with groundwater availability for future generations Additional model development will need to focus on county or local scale predictability More information on groundwater sustainability can be found on the following links Cambrian Ordovician Aquifer Lower Dakota Aquifer Silurian Aquifer Mississippian Aquifer Drought Assessments Reoccurring drought conditions across much of Iowa over the last 2 or 3 years have adversely impacted many of Iowa s shallow aquifers Drought assessments using local scale groundwater flow models have provided water managers and engineers the tools to properly space new production wells optimize pumping rates and increase the availability of induced recharge or surface water recharge In addition model output can be used to develop an early drought warning system so conservation measures or alternative water sources can be implemented Additional information on drought assessments and local scale modeling can be found on the following links The Skunk River near Ames Iowa Photo taken fall 2012 Shenandoah Iowa Drought Assessment Hudson Aquifer near Rock Valley Iowa Raccoon

    size moisture content mineralogy and ion concentrations influence how geologic material responds to electrical charges Geophysical models correlate to site geology showing the orientation and distribution of subsurface materials Collecting electrical resistivity data in the field Recent applications of geophysical investigations include Characterization of alluvial and buried sand and gravel aquifers Determination of depth to bedrock Fate and transport studies Characterization of surficial materials Evaluation of earthen dam or levee integrity Identification of karst regions or fractures Subsurface fluid flow direction Delineation of buried man made objects Electrical Resistivity Imaging Three dimensional electrical resistivity model displaying select isosurfaces Electrical resistivity ER imaging is the geophysical method most often used by the IGS ER measurements are obtained by introducing direct current to the subsurface and measuring resulting voltages ER imaging assists in vertical and horizontal characterization of geologic materials This method provides a high resolution model showing subsurface variability penetrating depths of up to 90 meters 300 feet Modern geophysical technology opens doors to new and exciting research possibilities In addition to two dimensional geophysical site characterizations the IGS is able to collect and interpret three dimensional data Modeling the subsurface in three dimensions provides a more complete understanding of site geology Electromagnetic Terrain Conductivity Raster image showing subsurface conductivity values Electromagnetic EM terrain conductivity assists with horizontal characterization of geologic materials Ground conductivity data can also be useful in determining lateral variability or the extent of contaminant plumes EM surveying shows average conductivity and in phase data to approximately 6 meters 20 feet below the ground surface The figure above shows EM conductivity results from a recent investigation For more information about the Geophysics Program at the Iowa Geological Survey please contact Jason Vogelgesang Tags aquifers bedrock electrical resistivity imaging electromagnetic terrain conductivity fate and transport geophysics IGS Iowa Geological
