  • Our People – Water Sustainability Initiative
    outreach on water sustainability These faculty members span the disciplines from engineering and economics to law and communication The Water Sustainability Initiative WSI is designed to address one complex issue that affects every man woman and child on the planet access to clean water The WSI builds on the university s established strength in this area including IIHR Hydroscience Engineering and the Iowa Flood Center And compared to many drought stricken areas of the country Iowa is blessed with an adequate and sometimes excessive supply of water Iowans put their water to work in many ways for transportation for irrigation for drinking water for recreation and recently for ethanol production But even a water rich state like Iowa can stretch resources too thin Iowa is also ripe for change The severe floods and droughts of the last 20 years have created a population eager to learn how to better manage water resources We invite you to meet the members of the Water Sustainability Initiative please explore the menu items at left Tags IIHR Iowa Flood Center UI research UI sustainability University of Iowa Water Sustainability Initiative Last modified on July 14th 2015 Posted on August 5th 2013 Home About Us

    in the Department of Geography His research focus is at the confluence of natural hazards and society primarily through the development of geospatial models of flood hazards vulnerability and resilience He teaches courses on water resource management hazards and society environmental justice and sustainability indicators Kajsa E Dalrymple Kajsa E Dalrymple is an assistant professor of water communications and policy in the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication Her research focuses on the intersection between science communication and public policy She teaches courses in multimedia storytelling social media marketing and risk communication David Bennett David Bennett is a professor in the Department of Geography His research interests lie at the intersection of technology policy and science While his work is squarely focused on geographic information science GIScience he is interested in the processes and effects of environmental decision making Much of his research is done in the context of multidisciplinary teams and designed to understand the social and environmental tradeoffs associated with alternative policies Sara McLaughlin Mitchell Sara McLaughlin Mitchell is a professor of political dcience and a Collegiate Scholar at the University of Iowa She is co director of the Issue Correlates of War Project and associate editor of

    wastewater treatment and reuse Craig Just Craig Just is an assistant professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and an assistant research engineer in IIHR Hydroscience Engineering He is faculty advisor for the UI student chapter of Engineers for a Sustainable World and he serves on the Engineers for a Sustainable World National Board He is also faculty advisor for the UI Student Chapter of Engineers Without Borders USA Jerald Schnoor Jerald Schnoor is a professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Iowa He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering elected in 1999 for his pioneering work using mathematical models in science policy decisions He has testified many times before Congress on environmental protection issues including the importance of passing the 1990 Clean Air Act Ananya Sen Gupta Ananya Sen Gupta is an assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Iowa Larry Weber Larry J Weber is the director of IIHR Hydroscience Engineering and a professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering His research combines hydro dynamic data and biological data of fish responses in order to understand fish movements
