and the environment as it is presented in the texts for example fairy tales portraying forests as dark dangerous wild places potentially justifies their destruction this could be motivated by political land disputes e g who has the right to hunt in what areas economical incentives for clearing land to make ships or religious superstition For another example consider an author s portrayal of animals who speak does this humanize them monstrotize them or make us reconsider their treatment Whereas ecocriticism is a quickly growing trend in English departments in both American and British universities and academic circles it is slower to pick up in foreign language departments and in European universities My research helps to bridge this gap and widen the discussion of environmental consideration in literature philosophy and film Natalie Deam French Music I worked on a project where video recordings were used to teach piano for beginner to intermediate students This research is important because it takes advantage of a free tool most people use in their everyday life YouTube to publish pedagogical teaching recordings that give a model for the way standardized pieces should be played ICRU Fellow Music Linguistics English and Writing The Iowa City school district was selected by the Kennedy Center to work with them along with other school districts around the country to increase arts equity for all students in grades K 8 through the Any Given Child initiative The Iowa Youth Writing Project IYWP a non profit based in Iowa City brings unique literacy and language arts programs to some of the state s most at risk youth via after school in school support and mentorship as well as a diverse range of extracurricular writing workshops creative academic and interdisciplinary Together with the Kennedy Center and the Iowa City school district

opinion survey give insight into international relations the way Egypt interacts with key US allies in the Middle East is important to understand Onalee Yousey Political Science Archeological Anthropology I and working to try and refit and identify the origins of Fire Cracked Rocks found at Woodpecker Cave Fire cracked rock is rock with a distinct orange or yellow stain as a result from prolonged contact with heat You find these rocks lining hearths and have been used historically in heating or boiling water The site of Woodpecker Cave is a campsite from the Middle to Late Woodland Period around 200 BC to 1200 AD and was previously excavated in a 1956 Archaeological Survey and 2012 Summer Field School The 2013 field school uncovered a hearth I believe it was Rose McCarty and Tyler Buck who actually uncovered it but don t quote me on that and the rocks from and around the hearth form the basis of my research By trying to refit rocks and identify where in Iowa they came from we can get a sense the range of the campsite The main technique will be using an XR F gun to identify the elements within rocks to see which rocks are likely to have a match and then simply trying to physically fit them together Luke Stroth Anthropology Psychology Cognitive My research uses pigeons to examine how the environment demands visual attention My research is important in two aspects First my research facilitates cross species comparison Past research only uses humans Our using pigeons can enhance our understanding of the difference between humans and pigeons and other animals Second my research provides a successful animal model for future research to explore the biological bases of how visual attention is controlled The follow up research may help us

My research has been based on imaging and analyzing radio observations large molecular clouds near the galactic center The galactic center can not be observed in visible wavelengths because there is a lot of dust and other objects obscuring the path however these materials do not block emission at radio wavelengths In particular we have been investigating the structure and dynamics of several molecular clouds near the central black hole in our galaxy to determine how the extreme conditions in that area affect structure and other properties such as star formation in these kinds of regions At first it may be hard to see the importance of radio astronomy research especially on a distant topic such as clouds near the center of the galaxy thousands of light years away However this sort of research leads to a greater understanding of the world we live in The human mind is impacted by the way in which we understand our world to work and a more detailed understanding can in turn stimulate the imaginations and creativity of others ICRU Fellow Pharmacology My research is very relevant to cancer research We test how well different drugs work on inhibiting the growth of breast cancer tumor cells and whether the concentrations of the drugs make a good difference My research matters because it partially builds off a fairly recent idea about how cancer progresses and tries to confirm this new idea which could lead to positive changes in cancer treatment Cells have various types of receptors on the outside that transmit important messages from other cells in particular scientists are studying a receptor that once stimulated starts a cascade of cellular signaling molecules until the information is processed and the cell responds to the message The newer idea that I referred to earlier is
