such as retrieving references or assaying samples will not receive priority Regular opportunities for the student to interact with and be mentored by the sponsoring faculty or staff member are crucial in all cases Faculty and staff members in all disciplines are encouraged to consider involving an undergraduate in their research and creative projects Do students already have to be involved in research to apply No students do not have to be already involved in research to become an ICRU Fellow This program was created to facilitate student faculty collaboration Students and mentors can submit an application for a project that will start during the upcoming summer or academic year ICRU does not have a list of faculty staff looking to work with students It is generally the student s responsibility to approach faculty about their interest in research and the Fellows Program Check here for more information Can students receive funding for both the summer and the academic year Yes Students can apply with their mentors to receive funding for both the summer and the academic year It is common that on long term projects applications are submitted for both Students can work on the same project with the same faculty mentor or work on a different project during the next funding cycle However applications must be submitted separately for both the summer and academic year Students may only apply with ONE faculty staff member per funding session Two mentors cannot apply for funding with the same student Multiple applications for the same student will not be reviewed Can mentors apply with more than one student Only one student may be nominated per mentor per session and receive the full scholarship amount The same student may be nominated for both summer and academic year awards with two separate proposals submitted However two students cannot be nominated for the same session under the same mentor and receive the full scholarship amount In some cases if it is feasible for the nominated students applicants may choose to split the full monetary amount and two students may be nominated For example if two students are willing to split the scholarship amount during the summer each may receive 1 250 instead of the full 2 500 For example during the academic year two students would split the 2 000 award and each receive 1 000 One student might receive the award during the fall and the other during the spring During the semester the students are not receiving funding they could register their research for academic credit If two students are nominated a separate application must be submitted for each student There will be an option within the online form to indicate a summer split or a fall spring only semester Who submits the application and when The faculty staff mentor will be responsible for actually submitting the application via the online form Responses can be cut and pasted into the form Please read the application instructions ahead of time Nevertheless students and

  • Zehra Khan | Iowa Center for Research by Undergraduates
in helping to create a cleaner environment The Stone Laboratory combines analytical environmental and organic chemistry to advance the understanding of the chemical composition and sources of atmospheric particulate matter The tiny particles that Khan is working with are called aerosols which can come from a variety of sources including vehicle emissions power plants and biomass burning Depending on their concentrations and chemical makeup these aerosols can induce negative human health impacts As a member of Stone s research team Khan primarily focuses on the samples from the Karachi field site detecting measuring and sourcing the organic components The filter samples Khan explains are small cloth circles that are basically black from all of the particles in the air that get caught in the filter Then we extract all of the particles that the filter has caught using the sonicator which is a machine that essentially shakes the soot and other particles off of the filter and into a liquid solution that we run through our instruments I also perform various statistical tests and analyses to determine the sources and causes of the air pollution The Karachi samples contain particulate matter of less than 2 5 micrometers in diameter PM2 5 These particles are smaller than the width of a strand of hair Khan says putting their size into perspective The smaller the particles are the easier and deeper they can get into your lungs This can make it harder to breathe especially for people who already have conditions like asthma The applied aspect of the research and getting one step closer to being able to take measures to improve poor air quality is what motivates Khan the most and she loves to tell others about it Khan cites participation in the 11th Annual Spring Undergraduate Research Festival as one of her most rewarding experiences It gave me a chance to show my hard work and talk about the exciting research that our group does She believes that one of the most valuable skills you learn in being a researcher is the ability to break down what you do for people outside your field It can be very challenging to have to explain your jargon filled research in general audience language What you get out of research she says is a lot of times what you make it I have become a more critical thinker and have learned how to better solve problems when they arise These are the outcomes that Stone wants for her undergraduate team members College Stone says is a great time to get involved in research because you get to explore a lot of new things and develop new skills Zehra is a productive engaged and dedicated researcher I m thrilled to be able to work with her The skills that Khan has developed as an undergraduate researcher will certainly come in handy as she pursues her future goals In addition to her chemistry major Khan is also on the pre medicine track Planning to take
