    University The Department of Military Science at The University of Iowa has been in continuous existence since that time With the exception of a few months during the Spanish American War there have been active duty Army officers assigned to the department on a full time basis since Lieutenant Schenck assumed duties as the PMS in 1874 The Department has made many significant contributions to the University the State of Iowa and the nation in the past century not only in providing qualified military leaders for times of emergency but also in establishing many traditions which continue to this day On March 11 1875 the first University band was formed as a branch of the Iowa Corps of Cadets and on June 17 1881 the first Governor s Day ceremonies were held The Military Ball which has been an annual event on campus for many years was first held on February 26 1895 Classes were originally conducted in the Old Capitol and various other buildings in the Pentacrest area until the Armory was constructed across from the current University Library in 1904 In May 1908 the Cadet Battalion went on its first large scale practice march and maneuvers north of Iowa City near Turkey Creek On March 1 1917 the war in Europe brought about the establishment of an Army ROTC Reserve Officers Training Corps detachment at the University of Iowa and the program which commissions officers in the Active Army and Reserve forces has continued to this day in similar form Today the Department of Military Science exists both as a full academic department in the University College and as a detachment of US Army Cadet Command s 3rd ROTC Brigade which is headquartered at Great Lakes Naval Station north of Chicago Illinois Annually the program s enrollment averages

    one hour elective credit hour course designed to provide you information on leadership principles and develop personal skills to enhance your experience as a student MILS 2010 023 103 Innovative Team Leadership A two hour elective credit hour course expanding on the principles learned during the first year courses Sophomores must register for this class and MILS 1010 to remain on a three year timeline to graduate MILS 1095 023 095 Advanced Military Fitness Developed around the Army s Physical Fitness Training Program this course offers one hour of elective credit Second we offer training experience and camaraderie found only in Iowa s Army ROTC program Our cadets enjoy a full range of Army training and social experiences including color guard activities at home football games Ranger Challenge Team the annual Military Dining out and our Homecoming activities just to name a few Third we also offer scholarship opportunities to qualified individuals seeking the opportunity to become Army Officers The scholarships provide full tuition in state or out state 1 200 per year for books incidental expenses and a tax free monthly stipend starting at 300 as a first year student If you are already a member of the National

    College These competitive merit based scholarships are available for qualified first year sophomores and juniors with at least four semesters remaining to graduate Seniors planning to attend graduate school may also qualify for scholarship benefits The Army ROTC High School Scholarship Process is for high school seniors High School graduates may also apply if they have yet to complete any college courses for up to three years following high school Scholarship applications for high school students are available on line at http www goarmy com rotc high school students four year scholarship Deadline for applications is January 10th of the senior year If you have questions about scholarship opportunities please contact the Recruiting Operations Officer at 319 335 9192 or army rotc uiowa edu Scholarship Benefits Scholarship recipients receive full tuition and mandatory fees 1 200 year for books and incidental expenses and a monthly stipend of 300 month for first year 350 month for sophomores 450 month for juniors and 500 month for seniors Scholarship Eligibility Requirements We assess the eligibility criteria for each student during the scholarship application process Scholarship Recipient Obligations All scholarship recipients must satisfactorily complete the US Army ROTC Program of Instruction This includes the ROTC Basic Course Cadet Initial Entry Training CIET the ROTC Advanced Course the Cadet Leader Course CLC and other Professional Military Education PME requirements Scholarship recipients must also maintain satisfactory academic and physical fitness standings All Cadets receiving a commission as Second Lieutenants incur a military service obligation of eight years This obligation occurs in the following ways Active or Reserve Duty of 8 continuous years Active Duty service of 4 years followed by 4 years Reserve Duty or Inactive Ready Reserve Members of the Inactive Ready Reserve are subject to call up and return to active service Reserve Duty
